Anyone have an extry laying around? Or recommendations or what to buy or avoid?
Any vendors have them for sale?

I made one and gave it to my uncle. If I can do it you should be able to easily. On mine I put a chunk of plastic for just in case moment.

I like the lag bolt idea. My stump vise with the 2 prongs (Oregon I think) doesn't want to stay put unless you pound the heck out of it.

I think I will grind the prongs off and weld a lag bolt to the bottom.

One thing that I learned is that most stump vises don't hold well when driven into the sides of logs. They hold much better when driven into end grain. Hence the name 'stump vise'? Seriously, they will hold better in a 2" cookie than a log - I have cut those just for that purpose.

Other options in the field are bore cutting into a stump or large round, or 'noodling' a slot part way into a log or round. Both of these work well if they are an option.

It just occurred to me that it might work fine as is, but if the lag screws don't hold well, try adding a washer under the head to bottom out on the stump.

This is my lower tech version:

Phil Sharpening Stump 2.jpg

Bore cut in.
Work the saw back-and-forth a little to loosen up the slot.
File some cutters; move the chain around a little; file some more.
Make it any height you want.

Works well.

I like it up in my face so I can see what I'm doing and not mess it up. I also like to be able to look at the cutters from the nose end...plus upside down gets the body of the saw out of the way...I'm gonna try it.
