So I played around a little with the Stihl FS480, since it was laying on the bench, new crank bearings and seals, while at it swapped for a new piston (good compression, but it was a bit undersized at this point) shaved off half of the flywheel keyway and after measuring it's alright, didn't bother with a gasket.
While before the engine was strong, now it's a demon, it just doesn't slow down in anything I can throw at it, and the rings are not even seated yet (only one tank through)
Much quicker throttle response and stronger at the top, it sounds a little tinny at idle, but under full load the timing sounds alright.
Of course my experience doesn't mean every trimmer would behave like that, however, aspecially with the timing advance (since you can always revert back) it doesn't hurt anything to try.
I didn't mod the muffler btw, it's plenty loud already, didn't want it any louder, what with it being almost next to my head and stuff
