Dealers can look them up if they were registered and tell you when and where it was sold.

Hey all I have a factory DP 046 Mag my Dad bought new, SN 137301815. Wondering if it is early enough to have the more aggressive porting of the 1st 46’s or not. Thanks!

Welcome to the site.

If it has a factory DP cover it has the D chamber cylinder and often the port timing is better than other 046/460s. I don't know the exact SN for the D chamber cut off, but I believe yours is before the change to the hemi head. Those are desirable, hard to find, saws.

I think it also has a better carb with a .70 jet (instead of .68).

I'll bet if you give it a tune up (HD-2 air filter, new NGK plug and new fuel filter) it will run very well.

I don't recall seeing published #s for the 046, but DP covers on the 066 were supposed to be good for an additional 0.5 Hp.

Thanks MustangMike! Dad believes he’s bought it around ‘95 but my understanding is 046’s weren’t out until early ‘96?

The saw runs fantastic, he gave it to me 4 years ago as it had been sitting for about 10 years in the shed. He says he’s put 2 chains on it since the original. I put new fuel lines & diagrams/ gaskets in the carb and it runs like no other (to me).
I don’t have a tach but I have the high side tuned to a hard 4 stroke no load (once hot) and with a sharp chain cleans up with no 4t in the cut. I’m no stihl worshipper but I have Ultra stocked up and run it at 36:1.
I’ve been reading the porting series threads started by Mastermind and would love to practice on scrap cylinders, but this 46 will stay stock. Any idea on build date of the saw? Thanks again

Its some of the earliest one. I have a carcass and it's 136 serial number. Brake handle still has the sticker said 1994.

I'm not a fan of Ultra at any ratio (and I am a Stihl fan), watch out for carbon buildup. I run AMSOIL Saber in all my saws at 40:1 and it lubricates very well and runs clean.

I believe another member reported (in the past) that Saber had a viscosity ratio of about 12, and Ultra about 8. Also, I don't think it burns as clean.

Enjoy that saw, it is a good one!

Thank y’all for the responses! When the ultra runs out all my 2t equipment will be getting the same Yama 2R as my bikes. My Rm125 ran with a windowed radiator in 88 degree temps for 2 1/2 hours with no sieze. I’m doing a bottom/top rebuild on it now and I believe that 2R at 28:1 is what kept it from squeaking.

So if the serial # wasn’t registered originally there’s no way of finding the build date window other than setting a degree wheel up and checking timing #s? Thanks!

You can ball park it from other close SNs, I think your Dad's recollection is about right.
