Hi folks,

I have heard a few things from a confidential source about a planned "881" for 2019.

Some prototype saw's are now out for testing here in germany. First details are:

  • 120cc
  • fuel injection
  • about 10hp on paper
From 2019 on, the emission standards do not allow a further production of the 880 (in europe). But some high stihl guy's like Bertram Kandziora and Hans Peter Stihl still want the "strongest and biggest" production saw, mostly for the prestige of the Stihl-Brand.

Got these info's from the same source which also announced the first infos about the 462 and 500i years ago. So they should be credible.

For me, as a friend of all brands, it will be interesting to see what husqvarna does with the 3120 and 395, when the new regulations hit the market 2019.

Around 70 years ago Solo built a saw in this class called a Rex. It too was 10hp. I think today shooting for 10hp is a little weak. As much as I'm excited about this unloved class of saw that don't get much R&D $$ these days I think it could have a few more horses, like 12hp similar to the Solo Super Rex. At least Stihl hasn't forgotten completely about the 8 cube class and for that I suppose we should be somewhat grateful.

10hp? I always thougt 5,5hp for the REX and about 7hp for the SUPER REX (official data sheet). Every year, we have some of these (amazing) old saw's on our GTG, nice sound good low end torque,
but it really doesn't feel like a 10hp saw.

I'm just as interested in what husqvarna will do with the 390/395/3120 in the future, as Stihl with the 881 (or 800i) and 500i. Stihl has EFI and a new low weight concept with the 462 and 500i that husqvarna can't match so far.

When will some unknown chinees or indian company decide that if Stihl/husky can make topnotch stuff in China. Maybe a Chinese company doesn't have to produce b-grade tools for themselves.
It's shocking to see the workmanship in almost any AM part.
As soon as the first factory starts to ship European grade saws. Even with 10 year old saw technology. They will be able to snatch up a couple of niches real quick.
Like milling saws.
Spoon a 15HP 200cc cilinder in a quality simple chassis and off you go.

Its 10hp SAE. So 10hp on the crank , and with the clutch, sprocket and a chain to spin there will be arround 7hp kicking out for the super rex.

Just like the older Ducati motorbikes, low in hp in advertise but measured on the rear wheel.

Nice Rex. Never seen one for sale here in Belgium.

My guess is the model will be an MS800i not MS881 inline with the fuel injected designation. The 880 is the oldest model now in the Stihl pro saw line up. It would be even better if they added another cube (MS900i) increased torque & horsepower and gave the milling/big wood sawyer's what they want. It could easily be done & be lighter than its predecessor. The MS880 stock serves a purpose but is not a fun saw to run that you easily fall in love with. They gotta give the new model some personality, if that makes sense.

Maybe the new 120cc saw will gain the benefit of weight reduction as the 462 is reported to have had over the 461. For a 60" + bar saw, I personally would like to see a 4-mix (not very likely) due to its low end torque where chain speed is less important. Though, with .404 being the largest chain available, such low end torque seems wasted.

The older 088/880 (before the steel muffler models but even they can be made to run good) is a fun saw to run IMHO long as you don't read chainsaw forums for setup lol
They smoke smaller cc saws in Aussie hardwood if ya know what your doing hard-nosed bars and all lol..

Yep that's about what you get for setup and shear cutting power! with an 088/880 reading the interwebs there lack of performance is understandable now lol

Not a fan of any 4mix products....and I'm a Stihl fanboy...just don't feel "right" to me. I'm hoping no saws go that route.

Don't worry, Stihl won't. I wouldn't want a 4 mix on anything BUT a VERY long bar saw. This is mainly due to gear drives being unavailable and huge trees occasionally so. I just don't like high, direct drive, chain speeds for those applications. And I'm a drag racer who loves speed. Rakers way, way, down and slow and steady. I have had ported 880's, and ported 090's. The 880's were good but the 090's felt better with more torque and noticeably lower chain speed.

Not stock but only basic Dremel work done. Still has base gasket and timing has not been advanced.. The bar is a Oregon hard nose 25inch, chain is Stihl .404 RS no mods just rackers done and hit with a round file, 7pin.. Oh yeah and mix is 25:1 dinosaur oil..
