Morning all.
I was wondering if anyone has a bit of info on this stuff.

i brought it cheap 100’ roll 3/8 x .50 I thought it was 3/8 x .50 lopro. All we get here in .50 is lopro, the std 3/8 is .63, so as I said in nsp3 thread I can’t get any bars for this chain, I think this pitch and drive link size is common in the USA .

anyhow from the pics you can see it’s a bit odd looking, stuff I’ve not seen before, when did stihl change from stamping 3/8 on the depth gauge to stamping a number that correlates to the pitch size ie 1,2,3
You can also see there is no oil channel on one side of the dl
Also it’s a wooden roll, all I’ve seen is cardboard rolls. Any ideas how old this chain is etc.

Common as dirt here where I live (NE USA)
I’m going to guess late 80’s, early 90’s

Is that semi chisel?

The groove is on oil delivery side of link, channels it up to rivets...

Yes semi to me, and stihl say “rapid micro”
The wooden roll means a date that it was put out of the factory.. they wood “pun intended “ know an approximate date of the switch over from wooden to cardboard

The single sided oil channel design, is dated as an improvement to previous. But when was it superseded to both sides.. idk..

And Here (uk) it’s like nobody had seen it or heard of this chain size and guage.
Every uk website do not list bars for std 3/8 x .50 :BangHead:

Yet I can see an improvement in cutting speed to the .63g we have here because of the Kerf difference of the .50 which is approx 1mm different

that would partially explain why stihl have recommend different bar lengths between the uk and the USA of the same saws.

I’m sure there is a bit more going on but I find it a mine field :(

I can’t answer for way back when, but as of now all the 3/8 .050g chain is only narrower at the driver itself. It machined down to .050 from .063 and this is noticed just below the rivets at the tie straps. I guess what I am trying to say is, the chain has the same width kerf and also the same strength as a .063 g chain, with a bit less rotating mass because of the thinner driver.

Run that chain in .058" gauge bars if You can get those, the .008"/0.2mm makes no difference as long as the gauge of the bar is larger.

Also, I have seen .050" bars on German eBay.

I have seen a lot of stihl chain since late 1980's. Don't remember wooden reels, could of someone transferred it to that? I only remember stamping 3, 5, 6, for gauge since then also and at that time i assumed the oil groove was a recent design. It seems to me it wasn't until around the turn of the century, Stihl started putting the reference line for sharpening on top the cutter, making me think the chain isn't exceptionally old.

@pbillyi69

I run stihl saws 036\044\461, which is 3003 mount. I guess if you have a bar, about 20” or 25” I’d happy pay for shipping ;)..

if not thank you for the very kind offer:)

Let me see what jimbear comes up with. ;)
The only thing with new bars coming into this place is more taxes, well that’s if the declaration is true :risas3:
