I bought a used 036 a few years ago. Never really ran well. I also never dug into it until today.

I found the cylinder to be lightly scored on the exhaust side. I also found the cylinder lightly scored. I don’t feel and deep scratches in the cylinder. The top of the piston has a lot of carbon buildup. The looks to be some wear on the piston skirt on the intake side.

I have attached pics. My question is, should I look for a new piston and cylinder? Maybe at least replace the piston and rings?

That dont look bad at all . Get the rings off that piston clean the grooves and get the carbon of it and out of the cylinder. Use a little wd40 and 220 grit and clean the cylinder . Clean it with soap and water then reassemble. Run some better oil and have it tuned should run fine for ya . See a few get build up like that from cheap oil

I bought this saw used. I don’t really know the history of the saw but thought the carbon buildup was excessive.

If the saw is for personal use, you can get by cleaning up the cylinder. After cleaning, see if you can catch any grooves with your fingernail.

I use a combo of abrasives and acid applied carefully with a Qtip to remove transfer.

Someone cleaned that piston already. Looks like carbon scoring. That physical appearance makes it look usable, but what’s more important is the clearance to the cylinder. Pop the piston in the jug in proper position and stick a feeler gauge between the skirt and the wall at BDC. If you can fit more than a .003 in there, it’s toast.

A new meteor is only around $40 and they run just fine.
