Not having ever come across one before I snagged this off evilbay.
s-l1600.jpg

It had achieved high milage with little mix oil or just plain straight gassed.

It’s an early production with a one piece flywheel/starter cover. It’s necessary to remove the wrap handle to get that off.

Remove the handle cover from the wrap and put it back so the guts stay put.

Anything past a spark plug, fuel filter or air filter requires engine removal from the plastic case.

Stihl version of a little red Homie XL complete with reed valve. [emoji15]

Lots of piston skirt worn off.

Them untouched ‘pads’ are .005” above surrounding skirt. [emoji2960]

With the carb in front and air filter in the rear a long plastic duct connects the two.

Them Krauts are problem solvers for sure. [emoji849]

The discoloration of the crank scared me so we replaced it with new.

Piston kit from my favorite dealer took four weeks to get in.

The cylinder had lost a patch of crome so we got a nice one from Travis in Stanberry, Mo.

All back together it was a *b-word to pull over. Mostly due to my assembly oil (mix) and trying to keep it planted on the floor while pulling on the rope. [emoji2959]

There is no dribbling fuel in the carb because of the long ductwork. [emoji90] So one just yanks and yanks hoping to not wreck an AV mount. [emoji2955]

Good thing I went thru the carb as I dint want a ‘do over’.

Now that the assembly oil is blown off it pops on second pull and runs on third.

It has a lot of parts in common with an 017. Crank, bearings, seals, oil pump and drive train (clutch etc).

Cool little saw.... How does it run? Does it have a fully adjustable carb?

Yes, once apart, you turn over every stone, needing it or not.

It may be the last reed valve saw produced by Stihl.

I don't know who reed is. But the one I worked on was for a friend. I decided that was the last one for me. You gotta take the whole blasted thing apart to
work on it. The engineer who designed this thing has never had to work on one (my opinion). And I'm a Stihl guy -- but those things are crazy.

I've used an 019T as my only climbing saw for years. Never had much trouble with it. Changed the oil pump once. They are a pain to work on so thankful I haven't had to look too deep into it. They don't have the power the 200T has but it works fine for my needs. It's paid for itself multiple times.

Engine is a snug fit in the case.

The rubber mallet helps settle it in.

I finially pulled my clutch off so I can get to the carb. Now to order a kit.

The clutch stalled me a year ago as I was just shaking my head over why would they design a saw like this!!

When the kit areives, if I can remember how it goes back togeather hopefully I will have a nice light saw for small work.

Would I do another?[emoji848]

It would have to be near free or belong to a dear friend. [emoji2955]

Mine was free. This thing is a disaster of a saw for Stihl. Any clamshell saw can be taken apart way faster and easier than this crazy thing!

As a Stihl head I have to agree. I've worked on more MS290's (029's, 039's) than I can count. I've also worked on the 025's (MS250's) which is pretty much a baby MS290 -- but the 019T broke
me the first time in. The dude that designed that thing smoked his lunch every day (with hog-leg doobies).
