I know there is a 1500 plus post thread on square filing and I plan to read it all but what I am looking for to start off is what files / tools do I need to do this right.

I am about to buy a roll of the 72Cl square chain that @fordf150 has and want to know what files I should be getting to maintain it.

Please break it down for me in the dumbest level possible. Brand, type of file, source to buy and even links if possible.

Thanks in advance.

@dall @mdavlee and the rest of you square please chime in.

Buy a homelite410 chain vise, and 10 of these Bahco 4-150-07-3-0 Flat Chisel Bit File 7' - AboloxTools.com
http://aboloxtools.com/cutting-tool...o-4-150-07-3-0-flat-chisel-bit-file-7-qty-10/. That'll be plenty to drive you batshit crazy and make you wonder why you ever got into this. But if you figure it out, it'll cut smooth as butter and last longer than round filed. Good luck Gary

I have the Homelite410 vise already, although I need a better regular vise to hold it...

Save edge and pferd double bevels work well for me. Also putting the chain in a pair of vise grips and focusing on one cutter at a time have helped me tremendously. It also gets the cutter up high enough for me to see the corner. Watching John Reilly and mike lee YouTube filing videos have been a big help too. IMG_1087.JPG

I have, not sure my personal use could ever justify the cost. If shipping wouldn't have been such a *b-word I have considered yours.

Frankly my own use wouldn't justify a roll of chain but I collected on a debt that i had written off so I have a bit of play money...

Personally use grinders are the best ones to own.
If your running the same chain, it's always set up where it needs to be.

Just order the save edge square files from Nate too. JMO

Also no need for anything fancy to sharpen square chain. I just did my with chain on the bar on the saw.

I don't know how easy it would be to get those in Canada. When are you coming up to hunt? Maybe I need to get you to bring me some.

I don't know if I'm going up with the guys this year. I've been almost every year since 2000, and it's time again to take a year off, I believe. There are a couple gtg's around that time I'd like to go to also.
