I had a job on yesterday, milling this oak log, well it’s the top bit of the tree in the background, the length was around 16’ but due to the way the log was sitting on a bank on some other logs, it had to be done carefully. And a slot cut out for the mill to be removed.
At the fat end you can see the tear/ripped union, to maximise the full slabs the ladder had to be fixed at an angle of 20\25*
Unfortunately the 660 with a 36” bar didn’t make the grade for long, I guess as it was hot it leaned out and while at full revs and the bar pulled back due to getting stuck as the wood was getting wider than the mills cutting capacity 29”.
It died in the fashion of not wanting to idle . I checked the piston. Pics later.

then had to put the 461 to work. Which did the job, just a lot slower.

my son has most of the pics, there was some lovely brown colours in the top part. he said he will send them to me later today. But in the meantime here’s a few. ;)

Sorry to hear about the lean out. Especially on an oem 660. I hope you can get that all sorted out.

But on the brighter side of the post that wood looks really awesome. I usually am attracted to heavy heart wood but the contrast on that is awesome!.

It wasn’t an oem p&c , it was a hyway bb,
It’s not a problem as I got an oem cylinder off the bay cheap and it cleaned up easily.
I was going to swap it before and never got to it as it was working ok.
I guess I’ve got to do it now,
I’ve just timed the oem cylinder
Int 80 exh 97 trans 120 squish 24thou
This cylinder will be tuned fat

some more pics :D of the oak

And the skinny end, same as the other end. I had to cut a slot for the mill because the top was curved and in the ground , once I’d done most of the cuts I could cut it shorter. It did roll once cut but now lighter, it could be moved for the final cuts,
Length 7.5 ft. 16”wide and 28” at the union

You have learned the golden rule in milling. Tune it fatter than you think it should be. Now you can make some power with that OEM jug and not burn it up. I saw these ported AM jugs running on a mill and I'm not impressed even a bit. They are about what a port matched to OEM with a stock gasket offering brings to the table. Remember most did transfer work to get any power from them. Fill that intake to 76 if your leaving that jug stock. Grind the floor or use coarse sanding before you work it in to the floor area. Thank me later. It will be easier to stay on the power band pulling your mill bar in oak.

I thought my AM (standard bore) did pretty well =/. But you are right they do need cleaned up some.

Anything that comes out of the box, runs decent and doesn't eat parts is a win these days! Getting a bunch of extra from something pretty much not capable of more than a good cleaning and some proper turns in the port areas to help it run better is also a win.
Porting, to gain 15% in power, I can go find elsewhere or just skip all that maths or thinking, just give it a quick clean out. The plating types are becoming less user friendly to mess with on AM offerings. If the port shapes are improved... filling in the intake is a good idea most times on the saws with a long in time. We almost always open up the mufflers more than a standard dual port so the exhaust picks up. I'm going to try some "optional" ports on a Meteor and a Hyway jug to see how that shakes out. I have a good feeling about this one idea and it is far from an original or new anything. It's actually an old racers thing to get more flow. More in means more out.

so i just bought a G660 for my Logosol mill. guess i will see how long she last.

Remove the ears on the wrist pin retainers or put in oem and while you are in there install an OEM wrist pin bearing. - granted the latter was said to be fixed.

Also replace the decomp with a oem stihl or Husqvarna. Whichever you find cheaper. They are the same thread.

Edit: and shim the bar tensioner if not it will wallow itself. - granted this may be fixed by now.

OEM wrist pin retainers 9463 650 1200
OEM wrist pin bearing 9512 003 3281
Husqvarna decomp 503715301
Stihl decomp 1128 020 9400

Also you might want to find a clutch drum bearing to keep on hand. They are hit and miss on holding together.

I replaced the clutch. But that seems to be an outlier.

And the oiler but that is depending on if it works or what you are doing with it.

The control group may need some massaging to get working.

Starter rope. But my chinese starter is still working and that's with me drop starting.

A bit more milling today.
I set the ladder on all the pink end grain logs, did the first cut. At a set level. So I didn’t have to keep resetting the height, Once all 9 were done I then flipped the top over and cut a 1.5 inch board , and did the rest of the log at the same thickness.
The mill is still set at 1.5 inch so I can just get on and mill. 42A928F9-90F2-41BC-A7C1-D8E55FFEB40A.jpeg

Good plan for just flat sawing.

I have the mills to take off the top and just switch to the slabber ready to go. It makes swapping saws easier and one can rest between runs if needed. Changing my base setup to make it easy for a loop change on the mill if I hit metal like bolts or those damn ceramic insulators... they suck.
