I posted a few pics in the nsp3 thread of some saws a friend got for me from his local stihl dealer.
He told me he gave them some wood so they could test cut the saws they repaired.

In the pics you can see these saws have all ready been used as donor saw parts. So I don’t believe I will be making many full working saws out of them.

as I’ve already got a ms260 with a lazy China pot on it. I’ve decided to crack on with the 260 that came in the pile of saws. It’s got a scored piston, so time to clean up the transfer and get some # numbers.

I’ve been busy with the 260 pot. It looks ok now, but I will look again in the morning with fresh eyes. ;) I'll also widen the int & ex before I put it on
So the numbers are
Ex 99
Int 70
Trans 121
Squish is 19thou after bgd, although I will check again,

I found the piston had been put in backwards.

And this is the cleaned pot. The mark in the top middle I can just about feel it with my fingernail but the others are ok.

I took pics of the others saws and marked them with stihl's first 4 digits

I'm not sure what I want to do with these, I have ideas, but some investigation is needed.
It would be good if I can build a 038 as well as another saw from the 029 & 039 and any parts from the 1119 series (038, carb) to make the saw.

but I will see how it pans out. I guess I will have to buy some parts thou..

I really like the 028 038 varieties, always a nice saw to run.
The 029s I've rebuilt have gotten the 039 and pop up piston from hyway, its a very nice bump in compression and performance.

Just a comment about the 029/039 .They are consumer grade saws and used at that ,firewood etc they do just fine .However in professional use ,like tree service work they don't hold up .Fact I have several boxes full of those saws or rather the parts from them purchased about 10-12 years ago when the worst ice storm to hit the country had it's epicenter right here .They at best lasted 2 years in that type of service .
On the contrary I have an 038 mag purchased used and did 20 years before it ate a piston which I've rebuilt twice .It was gifted to me when it was retired and replaced with a 440 .It's came out of retirement twice so far and never failed to carry the load .

Thanks, i will look into popup pistons.
I’ve never ran the 28/38 or the 29/39

I had a look at the 038 avs it was the only one with a top and air filter cover. it’s got the 50mm piston.
I got it running, I know the piston looks good as I took the muff off beforehand. However I didn’t run it long as it had a fast tickover. I,m gonna do a p&v check to be sure

Also that blower I got in the pile,, just needed the on/off switch looking at. It runs and ticks over, however the carb needs looking at as it seems to be well rich @wot. I did look at it because the primer bulb is a bit pants suckin air as well as fuel. I guess it would be good to put a kit on it anyway.
it could be something to do with a limited coil..
also it’s been ran without an air filter. So I guess one would need to look at the piston skirt.. and while I'm there fit new crank seals as the cost is small etc.

i can see I’ve got some work/hobby time lined up in the new yr.

I rebuilt an 038 AV five years ago and got it running really well. It mostly needed a new impulse hose and some outside parts that I replaced. Then I made a mistake and sold the saw after I posted its Pic here:

I must admit that I never should have sold it. The new owner loves the saw and runs a 25" bar on it most of the time. It has no trouble pulling that longer chain.

Today I took the p 038 avs, apart for a clean and inspection. It turns out there is a bit of a gouge where the bar oil screw cap fits and does not seal.
Hence the saw is rammed packed with oil & sawdust.
I'm wondering if I can file a round the hole and make it flat so it seals.

However it past a p&v test, so that’s good news.
The carb is a bling 48 and the L 2.5 turns out & H 1.5 turns. I’ve no idea why the low was out that much.

Has anyone ported one of these. As I'm wondering what the offset tonsil thing is in the intake.

And whats peoples thoughts on the the rings with the slight browning below them ?

cheers.

Browning below the rings is usually 30hd oil for mix in my experience .
Tonsil is for the rings to stay in place.
2.5 turns on the low is usually a hardened diaphragm.

I thought I’d add a bit more to this thread & the 038AVS.
Well it passed the p & v test although I will put new seals in when I get them along with other bits I need.
The problem with the gouge on the lip of the oil tank was solved by cleaning with break cleaner then filling with epoxy and sanding flatish.
Here’s the before pic.
9EA11530-CBDB-463F-A449-511897EBE82B.png

I robbed the av mounts off of one of the other 038 as well as the chain break spring.
The saw was well rich after I set the screws out 1t each. Whatever I did it was rich, so I took the other carb off and tried it.
It ran very well, infact after running for a bit it then leaned out and screamed, I think this carb has a pin hole in the diaphragm or a blocked gauze.

so I knew it was a carb issue, was it the metering leaver set to high ?. Well when I opened up this bing carb for the first time, I saw it was plastic and not the problem.
I though about the screws for a bit and took them out. I noticed the difference between the two, one was slightly longer and thinner point. And thought just maybe someone has put them in wrong ? Well I swapped them it was the problem and it solved the rich @wot.

I’ll upload a vid

Today I took the other p & c off the 038 that I took the av mounts off.

the pto side bearing had gone, I guess the seal was leaking. However the top of the piston has very little carbon on it. I'm wondering if it not that long/just had a new piston.
I'm also wondering if it can be reused after some fine sanding ?, I will post some pics when I clean it up, so you get a better idea on the marks it has.

I'm going to widen the ports on this cylinder and also bgd. Then a bump in the timing when I fit it on the saw above in post 17.

Maybe these pics better, now I’ve had them in ultrasonic bath.
