I understand that up near my property in the Catskills there was a location that used to make charcoal. My understanding is there was a large pile of wood, and they employed "log turners" who would climb on top of the burning pile and turn the logs. Rumer has it that it was a very dangerous job and not all of the log turners survived it.

I'm reminded of it every time I go up to my cabin when I pass that spot. They also produced tannic acid from under the bark of the Hemlock trees harvested, which I believe was in full tilt operation during the Civil War to tan the needed leather.

I don't think I would want that job. The most danger I am in is when I seal the top of the drum, fire starts rolling out of the bottom vents in the barrel. It's not that bad though.

I post processed the steel shims (two top rows) for my MAXX grinder.
They turned out good enough for whom they are for and considering who made them.

I had a little paint left from my last saw so I painted the front part and a little on the sides of the very ugly 440 case that I've been working on. I also shortened the top and bottom spikes of some 3 point spikes I made a couple of weeks ago, top and bottom are now around 1/4" shorter than the middle one, and repainted them today.

I tried cleaning the plastics on this 440 but it was a lost cause, after a good scrubbing with a Scotch Brite pad they got dyed.

Me & Baby Edna went fishing.
Kinda uneventful except fer the following pieces of cheap entertainment:
1.) While tightlining for channel cats or whatevers hungry, Edna hooks into something massive and ornery...after a brief/intense battle...the line goes limp/snapped and a ugly oblong snapping turtle does a backflip with a wad nightcrawlers hanging from his jaws!#Gameover:eek:
    2. I did a more than formidable job of feeding/stuffing all poverty stricken bream 3 inches and under! I felt the gratitude after each stripped hook...:cursing:
    3. Probably set a new world record in the 40 yd dash to the woods, as the 3 Mama Ukas's Ghost Pepper sausages I devoured @ breakfast decided my lower G I track was no longer a fun abode!:crybaby2::devil-king:

I have never seen this many hammered lifters in one engine. It’s not unusual to find one on occasion when changing a cylinder. I don’t know what causes it. The camshaft appears to be ok, thankfully. I’m pulling a cylinder on the engine so I can get my fingers on the cam to feel it to be sure it’s not damaged. C227582D-4767-42D8-ACEF-9D028294F496.jpeg

Almost finished getting my 440 back together, just need to tap a cover hole and find the chain break/starter screw.

Well, looks (initial) can be deceiving. The cam is wiped. 9789C1ED-5EF4-47BA-9646-92594C51FAAF.jpeg 19B857F0-E0FF-49F8-95FD-1B8F0640416C.jpeg
It’s not likely this fellow will be able to sell this airplane until that is corrected. Big $$$.
    Bummer.

How much does a cam run for one of those motors?

I don’t know how much it costs. Cams and cranks for these engines are not being manufactured at the moment. So all you have to deal with is what’s in circulation. I was just told that the owner has started a search for another engine. Probably the best solution. In that case this camshaft is costing the owner around $50k.
    So sorry, this is a 470, not a 520, so about $40k.

Here’s what the cylinder looks like, mit kolben.
Coke can for perspective. Kinda makes a chainsaw cylinder look tiny. image.jpg

Here’s an interesting pic that just came in. I believe this was caused by detonation . I just spoke to the pilot and I don’t think he has a clue. He said his pass came up and told him his engine was smoking. He landed and this is what they found.
This kind of damage can occur when the engine is leaned excessively. Can be caused by a plugged fuel injector for example. Can be caused by erroneous readings from cyl head temp, exhaust gas temp probes leading a pilot to lean it too much. Can be caused by simple pilot error. It’s about a $3k repair at this point.
