Also tried some gun blue on the old Zenith mixed results, I think I need to heat it up more first. View attachment 274342
What kind of bluing agent did you buy? Most of the off the shelf stuff I've seen doesn't require heat, just clean it well and follow each application with a little cold water and use 0000 steel wool about a minute after application each time. The more times you apply it the darker it will get.

I used the perma blue and put it in water each time and used alcohol to clean it but didn't use any steel wool. I did however heat up my old 30-30 barrel when I re blued I and it turned out much more consistent.

Try you some steel wool just lightly rubbing between coats and see if that helps you.

I replaced two handles this season so far. Both of the handles were the same brand from the same fleet-farm. Can you tell that I spent 10 times more time on one than the other? Next time I am going to spend more for the replacement handle to get one that is skinnier from the start.

Tell us more about the samurai swords. Nice stuff.
I got that sword from museum replicas about 25 years ago, it's the dragon head katana from the tv series of Highlander. It's a true full tang 1095 steel blade with a real temper line not a fake one.

What wood-working tools are you guys using to fit the handle to the axe head?

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I picked up a few old Kelly True Tempers and Plumbs. Found a few new handles with good grain orientation and bombed out on the fitment.

I'm not a woodworker, so I tried fitting the handle with a horseshoeing rasp and an orbital sander. No dice.

What are you guys using to "plane" the wood down on the handle?

Anyone have a bigger brother to one of these? It's a 1lbz10oz Genuine Norlund. I'm thinking I could make a trade for one of my handmade knives for one possibly??? I've look and searched, but have had no luck here and ones I've seen on Ebay have had an angle grinder taken to them.
