Helped a friend take down a yard tree (pretty much in the middle of Harrisburg PA). Finally milled the base.

This one was my only keeper.


Ended up w 16 planks. Large log was cut at 2 1/8” thick, smaller one at 1.5”. (bottom slabs were painted to seal)

That’ll kill some grass, lol. I warned him. Here’s my friend Mike with a slab from the small 1/2.


And my keeper. Holy sh1t were they heavy! Bout pulled a groin getting it to final resting place by myself.

I was curious about that too. On the smaller log, I cut 7” deep 1st cut. 4” screws into a 2x8 (as a mill guide), then we flipped it over and it had no trouble at all finding those screws. Quick math says they were 3” deep on that bottom side.

Those were a couple of nice logs and you got a pretty decent finish for chainsaw milling!

I bet the neighbors are glad you're done.

Square ground, full chisel full skip Oregon. Used 3 loops, 2 75JGX and 1 75EXJ. The EXJ was a fresh loop. It stretched pretty good. After 2 re-tensions, it settled down. That chain held its edge much better than the old lgx. After each cut, I'd let the saw idle while moving planks and refuel. A bit of fast idle to soak the chain in oil and away I went.

I had zero issues with it (EXL) oiling. There's another post over in Just Chains about that. I've had no problems firewooding or milling, which would definitely exploit any design flaw.
Chains are currently soaking in SimpleGreen and water. They get roached.

What oil do you run in them, and what ratio?

40/1 Red Armor. It's one of the least offensive smelling oils I've used. 89 octane 10%eth pump gas. I usually use 87 but it was a hot day so I opted for a few more points in case.

Watch out if you have a dog that likes bark. Friends Bernese mountain dog got deathly ill from chewing on black walnut bark, when he was mulling some large cants. Dog just sat there chewing on bark chunks, didn’t think anything of at the time.

Tap roots are supposed to be the money if you have the equipment and space to dig em out. Doing a tree job, older lady wanted this small black walnut removed by her house and it’s was maybe 4-5” at the base. We tied a 5/8” bull rope on it to the bucket truck. Rope broke when the tree folded flat to the ground. Tree didn’t budge out of the ground one bit.

That’s one if the primary reasons for removing it. They have 3 dogs.
