The tack in the boat quit working years ago and i wanted to figure out what was going on but cant figure out how to get tach out.
Ther is a small opening under helm where battery goes about big enough to stick you head in.
Any ideas how to remove the tach?
Heres a few pics.

Boats a 07 smokercraft powered by of coarse mercury hence my user name lol.

By just looking at pics, my guess would be some hidden screws underneath that hold the silver guage bezels to the dash.
I dont own a boat, so its just speculation!

Every marine gauge i have ever seen is held in place by a U shaped bracket with 2 nuts with 2 studs on the back of the gauge.
I can see that from underneith but tjere aint much room under ther. Barley get my head under and a hand with the flashlight. May try it though. I was wondering if that was how.
Mabe i could send my little girl under there. She is pretty flexible lol

That little access hole is little wider and little taller then the marine battery is. But im starting to think thats the only way to get it out.
Ther is also a conextor hanging down under ther but i couldnt see where it went. Im pretty sure all the guages have a harness in them. Will try to get time maybe tomorrow after work to have a look at it.

That's how mine was mounted...small wrench to loosen the two nuts...then loosen the rest with fingers..

Does the backlight come on?...it powers the meter....the signal come from the alternator and not the ignition (OMC).

On OMC the regulator had a defective diode that cause the meter to quit. I wasted lots of time removing and testing the
tach...replacing the regulator solved the problem

The tach definitely pulls out from the front .

The console was probably assembled, prewired then set in place. Look to see if there is a connectorbetween the boat wiring and the console. Good blace for meter test points.

Any luck? You may have to remove your switch panel to get access to the tach. You will probably want to check all the wire connections there anyways.

Good luck!

How about removing the eyebrow panel with an "S" above tach? Might give you a big hole.

Usually 2 nuts holding a strip of metal holding the gauges in.
Nuts are about 1/4"
Freshwater boats and pleasure boats have all the padding, frills that get in the way.
Saltwater fishing boats that i piddle with are just fiberglass with hatches or some form of access.

Just installed a new Yamaha tach in my boat.
It took longer to find the right socket for the nuts and properly replace ty-wraps than to R and R the tach.

Don't forget to spray a little corrosion prevent on the contacts in the plug and on the ends of the inline fuse if one is used.
Ty-wraps and orderly wire routing is your friend.

Biggest issue in boats is the idiots that wire them then idiots that attempt to work on the wiring with wire nuts and tape.
Bare splices in the bilge Splices into any old hot wire etc.

We see more issues with bad grounds than with bad hots in a salt envirnoment.
The ground wire will be green inside with very little corrosion on the ends.

Boats are so much fun!
