So, the fun store has a fairly new Remington 700 ADL .223 in stock. It wears a 24" sporter barrel, a brown wood laminate stock, and Vortex 3-10-40 (I think) scope. I remember this model from when it was new, somewhere around 2014 or so. The shop is asking $550.00 on it and I bet I could flip the scope on Fleabay for at least $100.00, maybe more. The rifle really doesnt look like it has been used much.

I don't need it by any means but I do have some guns in the safe that could go to new homes, and 700's in .223 are actually pretty rare around here. What twist do these rifles have? Will they handle 62-65 grain slugs?I read that most sporter Remington .223 bolt guns have a 1:12. I may try to strike a deal on it tomorrow.

Sounds like a nice rifle.
I believe you are correct regarding the twist of the Remimgton 700 sporter barrel in .223.
My Hornady manual lists a 1x12" as adequate for bullets up to 60g.
For 62g and heavier, a 1x9" or faster twist, is recommended.

Thanks. I have no interest in the flyweight bullets, I like the 55-65 grain slugs. As nice of a rifle it is, not sure if it would be wise to buy a rifle that demands special ammo and/or needs a new barrel to be what I want. I'll call the shop and ask if they know the twist.

The shop owner said he didnt know the twist, but it should be 1:12. Hmm, not looking for another project right now. If it is still there after a few weeks I may revisit it.

I have a 700 Remmy in 223. Nothing wrong with 55 grain bullets in it for 99% of what a 223 was meant to do. My favorite load to erradicate varmints is a 52 grain hollowpoint. Many have met their demise by it and nothing has ever crawled away.

I do not consider the 223 a big game round although there are those that do. IMO there are better tools for that job. I do have a 223 with a 1:8 twist that I have played with heavier bullets and it does expand capabilities a bit.

So depending on your intended purpose, this gun sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
