So I am looking for a new/used saw to meet my needs.

First about me. I have been in the chainsaw game for about ~4yrs now. I have rebuilt/restored a few stihl saws: including full dissembly to refinish, yes, i do split the cases. I have dabbled in porting, but the work is to small for me, I will leave that to the pros.

I build and restore the powertrain of classic cars, so naturally I am detail oriented.

Back to what I need.

I've recently had a ~5ft diameter oak taken down behind my house, and i've decided i want to make tables out of 4-5" thick "cookies".

So i need a saw that can handle a 62" or larger bar. I was considering a ms880/881. What reccomendations do you all have?

That or a 3120. Whichever you find for a better deal…doesn’t sound like you need dealer support.

Is it a good ideal to make a table top from cookies, would it not
be better to mill the wood into planks for table tops.

You need a big saw, and if its just a one off might be better to hire a saw,
a saw suitable for the kind of cutting mentioned will be expensive.

If your using cookies, know a few people who’ve had good success and probably source it from somewhere else if needed.

I wouldn’t buy a multi thousand dollar saw to cut a few cookies. If you milling boards maybe, have you priced a 62”+ bar, never mind a saw. Lots of coin for a one tree job/project. 8421B49C-86B3-4623-8BFE-5BE2AA3D212C.png

Since you know what you're doing with engines the world is your oyster as they say.
You could refurbish an old 090 Stihl,088,084 for the fraction of new saw price. If your not scared of straying from your brand any 6 cube/100cc gear drive saw will light your fire. A McCulloch 125,795, super 797 or such. A Homelite 3100,750,7-92,super wiz 88. Skil made a monster saw ? 1691 possibility. Husqvarna 2100,3210,395 ? Poulan 77 ,744 ,or others. Echo 1201 which is available new from a member on here.
The list is extensive and highly opinionated, I'd make a list of ones that sound good to you and narrow your models down to what you are interested in. Theres a few members who have run/owned them all ,but rare.
