Running Poulan Pro 5020 when starter rope broke. Changed rope, but now the assist spring keeps bending. pics included might explain it better. With spark plug out works great With compression of spark plug in, is when it bends. What am I doing wrong?? Please Help!!IMG_0331.JPG IMG_0332.JPG

Crap, I didn’t realize it was the newer design, I don’t know if there’s a non easy opt. Can either buy the new spring for $2 on jacks site. Or epoxy the 2 pulleys together.

Are you pulling it like a normal saw?? Or are you slowly pulling the rope and then letting the spring unload on the engine?

Like a regular saw . Not any harder than normal.

Your new rope is it the same length? You might be over tensioning the spring pulling on the starter to far?

i can attest that the “pullin pro” series of saws usually have very very robust starting mechanisms ;)

Cord is same length as the one that came off I did notice the screw holding the starting mechanism keeps tightening up when spring distorts!!

These easy start engines I've seen require a different starting procedure. You must pull slowly then let the Spring release its energy on the engine when its ready. Pulling it like a regular engine will cause this every time.

Is there a regular recoil?
Do you need the easy start
Unfotunately it looks like that is the only way it will work Trying to remove assist spring and put in a solid pin. I used a small rod I had but it bent. I will have to look for some case hardened steel to use instead. Open for any suggestions.!!!
