Poulan Model 31

My wife got me a Poulan 31 for Christmas this year and I haven't found hardly any info on these saws so I thought I'd start a thread on mine. Ups brought it today and I put an Echo 4000 filter on it and it fired right up. I looked in through the exhaust and it looked like it had some scoring so I did a compression check and it only had 120lbs, squish is .087. Pulled the cylinder and what I thought was scoring was just carbon marks. I'll update this as I go along.

I was looking around for info on this saw and found a pic of a 1968 brochure that showed what it cost new, $149.95, that's $1136.62 in now day money.

I spent a lot of time searching for rings and finally asked for help, should have asked a lot sooner, it turns out that Homelite 55537 rings are the same, 2 1/16" x 1/16” .

Them rings turned out to be to small.

I was only going to get this saw running but after playing with some 2 stroke software, I decided to use it and change the timing and squish a little, These are very slow running saws and maybe I can speed it up a bit, then again it maybe worse than what I started with. The timing number should now be, EX 104, TR 124 and the squish should be .022.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, we'll see, it may end up worse than when I started.

It probably didn't need it but I also drilled some lubrication holes for the bridges.

Edit: I used 31.5mm for the stroke but I should have used 31.75mm, the timing numbers stay pretty much the same when I ran them again using 37.75mm.

Trimmed the end of the bar, lengthen the stud slot, drilled a new oiler hole so it would work with a 60DL chain. Also dressed the bar, it was looking pretty bad. Waiting on parts now.

The Homelite ring I ordered didn't fit so yesterday I put the bottom ring up top and put the cylinder on without a base gasket. My carb kit is hanging out in Michigan, who know when it will get here. Anyway, I fired it up, no adjustments to the carb, one out on each needle. The oiler stopped working so I'll have to see what's up with that.

Yea, them old saws sound good but I'd have one heck of a headache if I had to listen to it all day cutting wood.

A peek under the flywheel, everything looks good.

I thought it might have a seal leak, flywheel side seal is leaking.

It wasn't easy but I found a seal for the flywheel side, $2.77 but you had to buy 4 plus $13 shipping. I hope it's the right one. https://www.mrosupply.com/seals/280...m_source=Transactional-Email&utm_medium=Email

I also clean up the oiler, put a new line in the tank and stretched the plunger spring to give it full travel, it's working good now.
