Has anyone on here ported a dolmar 143 before? I have a cylinder that has a chunk out of the plating by the exhaust port but otherwise pretty nice. Was going to time it up then grind on it some and see what happens. Any ideas what numbers to use?

No clue, but baseline numbers are definitely the place to start. How bad is the exhaust?

Has a chunk of plating missing on one side of the port I think it will grid out and if it blows up I am only out a little time

Totally. Just thinking that raising or widening ports can get rid of plating damage and change a ruined cylinder to gold. If it’s on the side you’ll just have to go by skirt width and bore. Post up some pics and numbers. Hopefully if we keep this on top someone will show up with info.

Pics and durations. I built one which I was happy with only after running bearings are loose on crank throws. Been shelved ever since. Im fairly certain I loaded a couple vids of it.

Once I get a bottom end built I will time the cylinder up to get started! Just wanted to poke around and see what you guys thought first

Finally got the 143 back on the bench. Timed it up at Ex 101 In 70 transfer 125 squish 28. I think to get this one perfect I would need to take some out of the band then lower the base to get the intake down anyone got any ideas?

Maybe I could sand a little off the bottom of the piston to get the intake down without doing machine work?

Those are pretty good numbers. No wonder 143 is legendary. Is that without a base gasket?

You definitely could. But just about everything could be adjusted a touch. A little higher exhaust and transfer, lower intake and tighter squish. It’s 10 times the work, but it probably would make more power and speed that old saw up. Hard to mess with a good thing though.

Yes no base gasket. It is a used cylinder that has a couple imperfections that's why I don't really want to pay someone to machine it. I need to see how much would need to come off the piston to get the intake a little lower and not make it free port. I am not sure how much less squish I would want can barely pull these old dolmars over with the compression they have now

I think I will try ex 100 in 78 if I can get it that low without going into the impulse port and transfers at 120. Thoughts?

Going to probably have a crack at another 143 porting this time on a new cylinder so I won't have to work around damage anyone got any other ideas on what to do? I think with machine work I will be able to get the intake down a lot more thoughts?
