I went down to Punta Gorda yesterday to help with the cleanup. I took my MS 250 with me. It worked well until I came to a palm tree. The tree quickly dulled two chains and my bar got overheated. I am assuming I need a new bar. I have posted a couple pictures. Yes the medal is blued and you can see the rivets.

Would you recommend another sthil bar or an Oregon. Also was using the green chains. Would the yellow cut faster.

Lastly is there a chain you would recommend for palm trees. These tore up several chains throughout the day. Worse than letting your bar touch the dirt.

Thanks in advance

Bar probably got hot, but not as hot as you think. That bluing you are seeing is from the tempering at the factory. Notice how it is even front to back? You can scrape the paint off a new laminated bar and find the same thing.

I don't have any input on chain types for palm trees. I've never had to deal with one. But if they are as you say...... Carbide might be your best choice.

I did a Google search that said palm tree hold alot of sand in their bark that's probably what's dulling your chains

I cut palms for the City of
Palm Springs about 10 years ago. Very sandy, also a full skip chain will help. They are very pulpy, stringy. Everything needs to be perfect.
The fact they are on the ground does not help

Yes like David mentioned, don’t forget to clean the saw well after. Whatever is in there will rot magnesium on the saw.

Thank you everyone. Just soaking the chain in a lye solution which took off all the pitch and other crud made the chain sharper. The gullets were jamed full. Just about to sharpen it back up and head back down to clear more trees tomorrow

Yes, .404

wash everything with soap after to neutralize the acid
On a .325 Stihl?
Good luck with that.

Cut everything to the longest lengths possible you can work with (least amount of cuts).
Less cuts you can make the better.

Palm fibers spring back and pinch the bar after cutting part way. May have to do wedge cuts or multiple kerfs, cut from 2 or 4 sides. I suspect More durable less racy cutter angles might help but I haven’t played with that. Archer chain tends to have a wider kerf, which helps.

I'd try carbide chain because of the sand, but it will cut slower. Yellow chain will cut faster. Stihl bars are about as good of quality as it gets, far better than Oregon.
Yellow chain might dull faster if it is full chisel. Also, try using a slightly larger file, or holding it slightly higher in the tooth might help it stay sharp longer in abrasive conditions.

I cut my fair share of palms. *s-word sticks I call em. Bloody nuisances. They are monocots, not trees. Regular chain is fine. Clean out that nasty debris everytime and spray with silicone spray to protect the clutch cover. Highly corrosive. Need powerful saws. 250 is a home owner saw with a lack of power IMHO. Kerf's of different species can be saw pinchers, wedges help with this. Coconuts are not bad but many ornamentals are brutal. Too many to discuss here. Put this coco between the goalposts the other day with a mere 201TC.....look at that curly top....lol.Screenshot_20230302_232531_Photos.jpg

Wow. Fooked that chain up. Glad I don’t have to cut those nasty things
