I bought a loop of Oregon 59L .404 chisel chain and it looks weird.

A 3/16" file fits in the chain profile on some of the cutters and seems to be in between a 3/16 and a 7/32 file on others.

I wonder if the cutters missed a step or something.

Not sure what you mean. It doesn't appear to look quite like that in the Oregon catalog.

Looks like that to me as well. Does this look a little better?

The 59 is still in production. The only other .404 that Oregon sells is the 68 which is a square grind.

It kind of makes me feel sales on the .404 chain are in a steady decline. I wonder how many pro cutters are using it anymore.

I must have it then.
My 404 is:
Oregon semi and chisel round plus RS full and some Stihl skip

Oregon harvester semi chisel full skip
Oregon semi chisel full comp and semi chisel full skip
Oregon chisel full comp
Oregon chisel full skip

Archer chisel full comp
Stihl chisel full skip but not RS... RSLF or something like that.
Few like new loops of RS full comp touched up
All chains are fifteen or twenty face angle.
My problem now is clearing chip milling. Eighteen to twenty cutters in the wood is about max I found to keep it moving. Tall cutters help. Have to make a full skip "scratcher" chain and try that.

The pro cutters here don't use 404 much. Tree services will with thirty two to forty two inch bars. Most don't have them.

Yup...up here you just ask for "chain" and you get 3/8 .50 unless you say otherwise...my dealer has had a mis ordered 36" .404 chain he cant sell for 5 years sitting behind the counter....

What's .404 chain worth? I have a 25' spool of 59 chain, a 5'3" piece and a loop that is around 20-24" all new. Got in a bundle with a bunch of other spools. The loop is marked 58 the rest is 59

68LX is round ground, 68C is square ground. There is also 27 which has micro-chisel cutters.

I have an older unused pre-made loop from Oregon and the cutter is ground differently. I thought some of the bulk 59 I sold looked more like the OP photo but I can't remember and I have no more bulk nor recent production stuff.

I love my 404 for timber falling and firewood. Takes more power to turn vs 3/8 but if you git the power it works great. Doesn't seem to get dull as quick. Get lots of life out of them. I understand its not for everyone but I love it.
