MS460 Case Repair

Not my saw, but does anyone have any advice on the best way to fix this?

- JB Weld?
- Welding?
- New Case Half?
- Other?

JB weld has held for 5yrs now.

Just make sure it's super degreased

Yea, but if you rip it down, may as well do bearings, seals, and why not a new piston while you are in there ... hey, pretty soon you are talking real money!

That's a lot of time & $ when $8 and a can of carb cleaner can fix it.

Possibly yes, I had one welded he said he was barely able to get it to stick , very hard to do but possible.

TIG would be very tricky.
By nature, chainsaw cases are oily. The magnesium castings are porous.

I'm sure it would be stronger, but as Keith stated, it is just holding bar oil, so it does not need to be stronger.

Just seems like the easiest solution that would work.

Most cost efficient solution

That can be tig welded, but the prep would take a lot more time than the welding.

The case half would need to be removed, degreased and blasted to do it right.

It might be possible to degrease and clean area with a small Burr and weld with just the tank and other parts removed from the case. Going over the area with the arc first can burn out the oil and debris, then it can be wirebrushed and welded.

I'd personally just JB weld it muhself, and I can Tig Magnesium.

Plus, anyone that owns an AC tig is gonna charge you $50 minimum. The filler rods are $2-3 each. I'd charge you beer Mikey.

If it fails it won't cook the saw. I'd do JB weld first and look for a good set of used cases which will cost about the same as the repair would.
