My seven year old MS 661-CM is cutting out in cuts. It has a new carb, new fuel filter and spark plug. Coil has to be good as it restarts everytime. It started after an jour of cutting some hardwood. I have done an mtronic reset.

Early coils had a habit of running lean. Thought maybe yours was losing power because of it. But that’s a later more current coil

Did you install new fuel lines when you replaced the fuel filter? 7 years of age, depending on use and fuel, can make them soft and suck shut.. Also, have you double checked intake boot for cracks and proper fitment? Impulse hose could also be dry rotting.. Just a few quick things to check..

Earlier 661’s had the bellows type intake boot with 2 rubber washers inside to help it from sucking closed. Mebbe the washers got discombobulated.

There is an updated boot

This was the part number of a new one to get. Have been unable to get one yet. Will check mine tomorrow....will check all those things @Loony661 mentioned. Will return with some update tomorrow. My coil never gave an ounce of trouble in 7 years, and this has slayed many big ass trees.

One more thing to check while you’re at it: on saws with a lot of run time, I have seen twice, the cylinders come loose. They still start and run, and will cut, but weak and also cut-out for obvious reasons. Check the 4 bolts that hold the cylinder down.

IF you get a coil, get the 661c mtronic update kit. Includes a new coil, filter and solenoid for $20-25 less than the coil

Definitely the coil Sir. Was cutting with it today and it just cut out refused to start back. Then it started once I got home. Do you have a part number for the upgrade kit. Just bought a new carb with solenoid as thought that was prob. This is a pic of my coil. Older one for sure. Think the 1144-400-4704 os the updated coil. 20230315_145725.jpg

Don’t know the new coil part number but anything below 4700c probably should be replaced as they had a tendency to run lean.

Here’s a kit
