My neighbor had a big oak go down a few weeks back. I’ve been spending a few hours here and there converting it into firewood and lumber. I just wrapped up milling some 10/4 and 8/4 boards. I took a break to grab some food before heading back out to properly stack it.
It was a gnarly log, heavy and hard. Combined with the heat and my desire for 10/4 boards, I’m beat. Milling is a cold weather game.

Very nice looking slabs. Have you decided what to do with them yet?
My wife want some Adirondack chairs, so some of it will get re-sawn and used for those. Some of the slabs have some incredible figure and I’d like to use them for a table top.
There’s still a bigger log to mill. I’m probably going to take some 12/4 cuts off of it for table legs. The tree was growing at the edge of the woods so it doesn’t have that perfect log taper, I’m hopping I’ll be able to layout some rift sawn cuts for the legs. We’ll see.

Milling is indeed hard ass work when those slabs are big and you have no hydros. What kinda powerhead did you use?

I just hauled, stacked, and anchor sealed the end grains. I don’t have time this weekend, but I have a shady spot for them to air dry. It doesn’t make sense to move this stuff more than you have to, I just didn’t want that mess in my neighbor’s yard.
I was in a hurry, so I didn’t get any sexy pics of the figure. That’s my neighbor to the right, he was making sure I didn’t hurt myself IMG_5312.jpegIMG_5310.jpeg

My truck was at its limit, luckily I only had to go less than a 1/4 mile.
