Last summer I saved a short log from the firewood pile. Had to move these walnuts to get my ladder so I took a peek at them. Milled them about a year ago.

The cherry I was thinking some floating shelves? The walnut I wanted to do a bookmatch table. After seeing it and it's shape I'd really like to do a epoxy table. The kind where the epoxy is in the middle. Kinda like this one.

I coated the ends with Anchor seal. I was very pleased with how little checking I found. Some rounds I had stacked for a good while also didn't check a ton either.

I haven't built something with wood I've milled, but I figured significant planing would be involved to compensate for warping and the rough cut of a chainsaw, so I don't worry about the ruffle waves.

Maybe the chain pulls away from the bar on the back side and cuts a wavy pattern.

I hadn't considered it was happening on the back side of the cut. I have boards that will alternate almost perfectly smooth with ruffles potato chip surface. Usually I only get ruffles with new chains, but sometimes It will randomly happen. When I got my Carlton chain super sharp it would rarely if ever leave ruffles. Maybe it's a sign of the chain stretching/breaking in.

I would guess it happens when loading the saw more causing low rpm, more vibration, potentially faster cut. Slow with high rpm is a good bet for making a smooth finish on anything. If doing that doesn't prevent the ripples, it will at least shave them down so you didn't know they were trying to form.

Very nice Dan. Do you have access to a big planer?
The grain is dark on those pieces.
Haven't found one yet. A buddy has a 15". Jawney has a place by him and that's about 90 minutes away. I'm sure I'll find one closer but that's an option. The dark ones are the Walnut I milled last spring. Got them under a roof now.
