Hey,
I've got a Makite EA 3501 that runs like a top but is over oiling. I've turned the adjustable oiler down to its minimum setting but the thing just sprays oil at high rev and then pools on whatever surface you lay it down on. I know, I know - a white man's problem. Any body got some insight into this? Is it normal? Should I stop complaining?

Are You possibly using some very thin non chainsaw bar oil?

If not try using winter B&C oil, it should be thicker.

EDIT:
My apologies!

Not winter B&C oil, I meant SUMMER B&C oil!

I never thought of that, but my Husky 61 and 372 and even the 3501's bigger sister (4300) don't spew like she does on the same oil. Hmmm?

In my experience winter b&c oil is thinner then summer b&c oil. Maybe it's a engine driven oiler and the saw is idleing between cuts then sprays off the bar when revved up to cut something???
That was a brainfart on my end!

Yes, I meant to write SUMMER B&C oil to be thicker.

My apologies!

Good guess on the oiler pumping at idle.
I still haven't gotten used to my PS-9010, she's pumping oil idling.

I think you may be right, Ill break out the tach and see what speed its idling at. Am I safe to assume the oiler should not oil at idle? And that too high an idle will cause the oiler to run?

Most modern saws will oil only when the clutch drum is turning, but there are still units on the market that feature a crankshaft driven oil pump and those will piss themselves while idling.

I am unfamiliar with the Makita EA3501, I have no idea whether the pump is crankshaft or clutch drum driven.

Maybe these guys can shed some light on the topic.

I can not see a clutch drum actuated oil pump driver in the IPL, the EA3501 may have a crank driven pump (position 67, pump drive).

You may have to change your saw use behaviour when running a saw without a clutch engaged oiler. Don't sit it down idling, switch it off and restart when ready. You'd think in todays age a saw with adjustable oiler would engage off the drum not crank. Bit of a deal breaker when buying new saws IMO.
