Hey guys,

I’ve searched for this issue prior to posting this but I have an issue and not sure how to arrive at the solution. I bought a dcs6401 on eBay with a locked up motor. I am not a chainsaw rebuilder, as a matter of fact, this is my second saw rebuild so I’m pretty green. I do have a long history of turning wrenches on Chevy motors of all years, so I can usually figure stuff out. So, I tore down the saw to try and diagnosis the failure. My best guess is lean condition caused the lock up due to oil seal failure (found the lip of the seal broken) or the oil seal failed due to the bearing burning up or a combination of both. Hard to diagnose the bearing bc it is so gummed up with paint and old fuel from sitting so long, the fuel broke down the paint in the crank case. So, I started checking all components out and found scoring on the crankshaft on the flywheel side where the shaft would be seated inside the bearing. My guess is the shaft might have turned inside the bearing. I attached pics to show the damage. My question is, how should I determine if I should replace the crankshaft? I put a mic on the shiny part of the crankshaft and it measure out at 14.96. I just don’t know what this part of the crank shaft should measure at. Also, when I cracked the crankcase open, the crank literally slid out of the bearing with no effort (flywheel side), which may be my answer in itself. The clutch side required a bit of tapping with a hammer. Can anyone give me some advice? Sorry if this is a bit “newbie”. Just fell in love with chainsaws and wanting to learn all I can from the veterans on this site. Hate to throw parts at the saw without some confidence.

Bearing race spinned on the crank.
Crank should be replaced.

Whoo! You paid a pretty penny for that too! Sorry for the bad luck that thing looks like it sat outside.

I paid too much to start with but really wanted to learn these saws and learn to port. I assumed it needed a cylinder but didn’t think it would need a crank. Sad but I going to part it out and cut my losses.

If you part it out what would you want for the clutch cover?
