Been keeping my eyes peeled for a Makita 6421 to convert to a 7910. Found one that has 6421 on the recoil but gray covers on the cylinder. Would that make it a 6401? I think it will still work just a different muffler. I don't have the saw in hand just pictures to go off of.

Sorry, covers are gray. Looked kinda tan at first

Ok, seller says it has low compression. I am going to try to pay less than $200 for it.

Well see. It seems that it will got for more than I wanted to pay. I might still put an offer in but looks like it will go for more than $200.

Looking at the muffler from the front of the saw? or looking at the handle from the rear of the saw?

My 6421 has left hand decompression valve and grey covers. 6401 has no cat in the muffler. 6421 does.

You got me on that one.

6401 - Standard Muffler = 2001-2009
6421 - Cat Muffler = 2010 - 2011
6421 Type II - Cat Muffler, RH Deco, Black Hoods = 2012 and newer

Needs an orange starter and it will be perfect! What broke the case?

Sounds like it was a change over in production.
