M-tronic conversion ms461

Wondering if it would be possible. I am not so techy but i figure it would have to be a 661 coil and carb with a suitable flywheel(if there is one)? I am not interested in the 'would it be better' debate, just if it is possible.

What kind of flywheel is needed? Single or dual magnet? Did the early 046’s have metal flywheels? Would an 044/440 flywheel fit/work?

I believe all 046’s have the poly fw.

But never tried the others

From what I can see in pics the 661 flywheel looks to be a dual magnet? Here is what looks to be an aftermarket metal flywheel replacement for 1128 400 1211 which looks to be a dual magnet as well.

From what I have seen, every MT flywheel is the newer style/metal/dual magnets. Uncertain if newer style wheel inner section (unthreaded-needs a 2 bolt puller) would be correct for the diameter and depth of the old style flywheel (threaded female inner section). Then you would need the flywheel broached for a new keyway to set timing if you could find a mountable MT coil.

Then there is the carb. Not certain which of the new series would fit on the HD mounting pattern (staggered holes) of the 1128. Most of the new MT carbs have that up/down actuated linkage, not he push pull type.

Interesting concept. Can’t wait to see if you come up with a viable swap.

An 1128 dual magnet fw might be for a 441. No idear if the cranks are similar

046, 460, 461 are all poly just different coils. 044/440 won’t work iirc correctly and you’d need a dual magnet. So it would basically be fitting 462 parts on it but a 462 has a 2mm shorter stroke so you’d have to time it to see where to make adjustments.

Dual coil? They are poly and only have one set of magnets.
