About wore out my cheap Stihl woodcutter apron chaps. Looking for a replacement with a tougher shell. When I worked for wildlife and parks we had some Stihl branded chaps that were canvas shelled instead of nylon. Looking for something similar, ideally with a pouch for the scrench.

Hit the post button too soon...Been looking at Stihl dynamic and pro mark, but would be open to other suggestions. Biggest deal is ripping the shell when wading through limbs.

I have had the promark for at least 7 years and they have held up well. 9 ply and machine washable and dryable. Thick, nice in winter but not in summer. I believe they are made by Elevex which may be cheaper under that brand.

It says the shell is "codura". Is that the more canvas feeling material?

Yes. Cordura is good stuff. Very abrasion resistant. This from google:

Cordura is a premium brand of technical fabrics known for exceptional durability, primarily made from high-tenacity nylon 6,6 fibers. It withstands wear through engineered air-textured yarns that resist tearing, scuffing, and punctures, often enduring double the abrasion cycles of standard nylon.
Its abrasion resistance varies depending on the weight and type of weave:

Common Cordura Weights
  • 500D (Denier): The sweet spot for balance. It provides heavy-duty tear and abrasion resistance without excess weight, making it ideal for flexible areas like jacket reinforcement panels, workwear, and travel bags.
  • 1000D: The heavy-duty standard. It is extremely tough and heavily used in military gear, tactical packs, and high-stress luggage where maximum protection against rough surfaces is required.
  • Ballistic Fabric: Originally developed for flak jackets, these tightly woven, heavy-denier fabrics offer maximum protection against scraping, tearing, and friction.
Performance & Testing
While specific results vary depending on the testing method (such as the Martindale test), 1000D Cordura can consistently withstand upwards of \(100,000\) to \(250,000\) abrasion cycles before tearing. This level of durability prevents shredding when sliding on rough pavement (common in motorcycle gear) or when rubbing against rocks and tools in construction.

Additional Properties
Beyond resisting surface friction, Cordura is often treated with polyurethane (PU) coatings or Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finishes. This provides high levels of water repellency, along with oil and dirt resistance, while remaining breathable.

I wear them high, above my belt, so have been using 36" and like the way they fit. Appreciate the offer though, that's a hell of a deal.
They are the same length as my old Baileys were but I’ve gotten used to the longer Husqvarna pair I’m using now.

I have some bird hunting chaps made from concurs when it first came out. Over forty years old and still going strong.

Do you guys have them long enough to cover your boot to the toe?

The 32s don’t, which is what I used for 40yrs :p
The new Husqvarnas I picked up do and I prefer them after a month or so of use. They are quite a bit heavier, however.
If I forget to wear my hi-top boots and go cut wood, I don’t get boots full of chips.

I have used labonville chaps for years. Happy with the durability. Plus they have long sizes for taller guys. I get them from madsens.
Was looking at these. They offer a fire resistant model as well, which I like, but they're out of stock in the size I want. Might call them Monday and see how long out they are. Thanks for the lead. I noticed their 5 layers vs promark's 9. I don't know if that's apples to apples. Since I have beefier saws I was looking at more protection. (Shout-out singinwoodwackr)

Cordura is nylon. Just a thicker, coarser thread / yarn, that is more abrasion resistant than finer weaves.

Usually spec overlapping the top of the boot by 2 inches. Too short: unprotected leg. Too long: clumsy and snag stuff.

Labonville was a thought I had.

Clogger also makes their ‘Defender’ chaps with a tough, protective, outer fabric. Versus their ‘Zero’ chaps, which are designed to be ultra light, and cooler to wear.
