Interested in hearing about which sealants you fellows use for your saw work.

I was using Dirko and really never has a problem. I just bought Loctite 518 and noticed it mentioned using an "activator" when using it. I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere here.

My reasoning for the 518 switch was the fact that it's supposed to only set up in the absence of air, so any excessive sealant that squeezes out into the area between the jug and case would be washed away instead of blocking airflow.

Which sealant do you guys use, why, and how do you use it?

518 for me

It's never failed on me and easy clean-up. Never use the activator, just clean with acetone and apply 518
When mounting a jug with no gasket, do you apply to one side or both?

How do u keep base clean after using the ring compressor?

I've been using yamabond 4 because it's the only "approved" sealant I could find locally. I've had good luck with it so far, doesn't seem to be anything special.

I've only used yamabond 4, cleanup is really easy which makes me wonder how well it actually works as a sealant.
I recently had some motoseal given to me so I'll give that a try.

I only apply sealant to the case, just for the simple fact that I use the ring compressor as well

I've been using 518 also for the same reasons everyone mentioned plus I can walk in and buy it at the auto parts store.

I also only apply it to the case and haven't seen any problems yet.

I keep the ring compressor up against the cylinder base, basically not allowing the ring compressor to wipe or rub across the 518 that I apply to the crankcase, just pull out the ring compressor.

Smaller bore/stroke saws dont leave a ton of room to remove the ring compressor, but even on my little 33cc Echo, I was able to remove the ring compressor without wiping the sealant

Dirko HT works great on the Stihl 192T saws, and those are about the only clammys that have crossed my bench lately. I just bought some Motoseal and will try that sometime.

I have the Yamabond and the 518. Should be enough to last me a life time between the two. I bought the Yamabond after the 518 when I read about the activator. Idk, call me paranoid.

What's easier to clean on disassembly, Yamabond or the 518?

I believe that 99% of the problems that do occur with sealants are related to surface preparation and if there's any nicks or scratches from removing gaskets.
Absolutely that's the life of a sealant when possible i pressuse wash a surface even used a steam jenny before lol but prep is key.

It seals great. The 6 cyl in the car in my av pic is mounted close to straight sideways. It was the only sealant I found to get the pan and v cover to seal up 100%.

On saws, 518 and three bond depending on where I'm putting it.
