I recently got a Murray LT 46” with a 20hp Tecumseh twin on trade in. Ran great until the starter went out this morning and drives ok, not that I drove it very much at all. The problem I can’t figure out is the steering. Here are pics, sometimes it’s close to good and others both wheels turn opposite ways. I’m confused as to what is bad or missing. Possibly not reassembled correctly by the previous owner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to follow all the steering components from the wheels all the way to the steering wheel and find out what is worn and loose.
If you rock the steering wheel while watching each component, you will find it.

If it's like most older mowers it'll need just about every wear part in the steering replaced. Spindle bushings, wheel bearings etc... all get sloppy over time, worse if your soil is sandy. Most of the time pretty cheap on eBay and Amazon, I rebuilt the front of my craftsman for under 50 bucks this spring.
