Rebuilding a backpack blower. Cleaning everything in prep for reassembly. I inherited this from my ex son-in-law about 10 years ago. Thinking this thing is 10-12 years old. Got couple questions:
1. - While cleaning case where jug mounts and notice what looks like motoseal. Don’t think anyone has been in this since it left the factory. I’ve never used sealant when using a gasket; is this common? None of the surfaces are scratched or pitted so don’t see any need. What says y’all?
2. - The ports look like the carb is set really rich and everything is coated with carbon. Unfortunately this is a barrel type carb with no mixture adjustments that I can see. Yeah this thing is 10 years old but c’mon, this much carbon? In the ports, top of jug, inside the jug, all over piston, the rod is coated, the rings were STUCK, etc. question is, is the any way to tune the carb so it’s a little leaner?

thanks for any suggestions

I learned recently some blowers have adjustments hidden by tiny plugs in different places. I haven't yet looked into them to see what tool is required. You can possibly find where they are by looking at a carb parts list which may label the high and low speed.

What is the carb model number, as @Nutball says some of them barrel carbs are tuneable when you find the hidden screws. Ie the service manual from walbro shows them iirc.

There are a couple things that can cause the black carbon everywhere. A stuffed up muffler, poor ring seal, and poor quality oil come to mind. I’d open up the muffler a little bit to let some heat and exhaust out and change oil. Most better oil nowadays has detergent in it that will actually clean the motor by running more of it

Poor quality oil? What about high quality Klotz racing Benol Castor oil, it can carbon up an engine like crazy.
