Either closed or open will work on the 920
I'd prefer the open port myself ...you'll gain a little more with it
The open port came on the 930's

Huh. I didn't realize that you could run the open port cylinder on the non-notched case, and also with a windowed piston. Is the 930 case notched like the 910? I knew that they went with the open ports on the 930 because it made more power than the 920, but those 930 pistons were not windowed.

I believe all the 920 cases were notched like the 930's ...at least the few I have are .
How bad is your 920 cylinder ?

It's scored up above the exhaust port probably due to the carbon buildup. Honing didn't clear it.

I have only run the saw for an hour or so after I acquired it over 5 years ago. I had pulled the muffler and noticed the carbon, and the piston looked tired. So I pulled the jug, honed it, and replaced the piston and rings with a VEC kit. I ran it a minute or two since.

can you still get a piston?

also I,m surprised that the open port cyl
is considered stronger, isnt it usually the
othe way around?

Yes. I got one from Northwoods Saw. It's a VEC, which appeared to be good quality.

I was planning on keeping them as backup, but I may reconsider. I was also going to try my hand at porting the cylinder to see what I could get out of it.

I popped the jug today and saw that the case is NOT notched.

That's definitely odd ...I haven't seen a 920 that wasn't .
Possibly early production ones were not notched would be worth some research.

Well Ernie, I was wrong! I measured squish this morning and decided to do a gasket delete to bring it down to under 40 thou. The pic I took last night was just a peek thru the front. After removing the cyinder I could see that the gasket was covering up notches! Here's a pic after I removed the gasket. I'll be dipped!
