is this considered “goofy” filing? They use a 90* degree square file and then use a round file in the gullet.

It looks like 2 different files did that rather than a goofy file. Maybe they did the round part with a goofy file.

This is what I was referring to, Square ground withe a 90* flat file, then round file to clean out the gullet.
It was done with a chisel bit or goofy file of some sort, or a square grinder. It’s not a regular 90° file though. Might be goofy since it looks like that’s what the cutter is standing on. And then a round file for the gullet.

There’s actually some talk that supports filing the gullet at a blunt angle like that to carry chips out better. No idea if it works or not

I have seen photos like this, where there appears to be more of a side plate edge. Although, both eliminate the 'shelf' that both Oregon and Madsen's describe in detail.

This profile is very new to me. But I ran across a (French) YouTube video describing it today. Looks like the same image that the still photos above are from.

Anybody parle français?

I know him from another social media outlet. He's the same feller that made the real good double bevel vid.

If you look at factory square the side plate
is straight up and down going clear to the tie strap .It junctions with the top plate in the "working corner " If you "beak " it it might cut faster for a short period of time but will not hold the edge very long . I seldom do any square with the exception of my version of a race chain . It might be a little faster if you are fond of filing which I'm not .
Those deep gullets in round just carry a larger chip before it rocks out which may be faster if you have enough power or slow you down if you don't .That's up to whoever and whatever they have to pull it .

I for one seldom cut a live tree so it's all standing dead or downed and it's all hardwoods .Trick filing is of no benefit for me because I'd spend more time filing than cutting .With approx. 6-8 acres there is so much to cut I'll never run out the rest of my life .I've been at it 26 years at this location and have not made a dent in it so far . The good thing is is the fact it's close .
