Not sure where the right place for this question is? Any thoughts? They came off the interior of barn that’s coming down. Various widths and lengths but all nice rough cut 1”. Decent weight to them. Pretty light color when sanded. Thanks in advance.

the 3 on the left were just power washed. Right was washed and is now 2 days dry.

After further investigation. Sure looks/smells like oak.

Hard to see. I want to say maple or hickory. Oak always has distinct lines on the end grain, perpendicular to the rings.

I really thought Maple at first while washing. The light color and larger pattern and not as tight grain but after working with sure smells like oak? Never handled much hickory in any lumber form. Hardly seems to last long enough on the ground for firewood around here.

I’m going to run a piece through the planer tomorrow and report back.

I always thought oak was known for black spots around moisture and metals? This disproves my further investigation because in first pictures the nails are still. After removing they don’t seem as stained in areas.

Just has the weight of a hardwood of some kind and the smell similar to red oak I’m used to working with when building something.
