I would go back to the dealer. I'm with above 2 gaskets no thanks.
Thing is I bought it from the dealer knowing that it wasn't running. He cut me a deal on it because he wanted his mechanic to be working on customers saws making him money instead of working on a used saw that may or may not sell. I honestly think if the mechanic didn't feel rushed he may have done a better job.

The two gaskets thing though is a little crazy. I know for a fact that he has done this before on a 268 in almost pristine condition that a guy was having trouble turning it over.

Ok guys I'm getting closer to having this thing back together and up for sale. I managed to track down a fuel line that had a large enough OD to seal without a grommet yet had a small enough ID to fit over the filter and carb barb tight. I was in a hurry and didn't take a picture, the tubing didn't have a size on it but I'll check with calipers and report back.

Next thing, reassembly and fire this beast up.

I talked to the guy today. He said he usually uses dirko on stihl stuff and yamabond on everything else. He said he just used the rtv to hold the gasket in place for line up. I told him its not a good idea. Lol

If it will run on choke I would double check that fuel line their is something not right their it might be pinched at the grommet

Is it a return type carb maybe lines are switched. I have not finished thread so this may have been solved already

Got her running right after lunch, she is wearing a 28" husqvarna bar and when I get a dry day is gonna get put in some wood to tune and try it out.
Have you had time to give it a blast yet and if all is well?.. wondered what you think.:)

It's been wet all week so I haven't had a chance and I went to an equipment auction today. Maybe tomorrow I will get a chance if not tonight

Ok the 281 made it out of my back seat today. Went over to a buddys house to cut some wood and he wanted to fell a tree. We got it out fired her up got her tuned in, she sounded great. Four stoking a little rich but I like it like that. He starts to make his cut it sounds great it's throwing chips... Then she dies, can't get it to restart. My face falls, I take it to me tailgate, first thing I check is the fuel. Pull the cap, gas all the way to the top crap. I stick my finger in the hole and feel around. Turns out the filter fell off and the hose was stuck under the fill hole so when it was tipped on it's side it would run out of fuel. I'm gonna shorten the fuel line and put a different filter that won't fall off.

But man did she sound good the whole 10 minutes she was running.

Sounds like your on the last leg getting it running right. Mad isn't it how some little thing can scupper the job ! There a strong runner and from memory have a "Ping Ting" note on tick over ..Lovely :)

I considered doing a video, but I'm not sure how to post it here I've never used YouTube that way.

And yeah I aim to fish the filter out of the tank throw that Damn thing away and get one that will stay on, gotta shorten that line too so it can flop around in the tank. May get to it today if I feel like going to the farm.

Looks like when the filter came loose it sucked some debris into the carb and some must have made it past the screen. I'm gonna pull the carb... Again, and clean it tomorrow. It will start then die like it's running out of fuel. I know the fuel line isn't pinched again, I can presurize it and fuel will flow out. Does anyone know if the intake gasket kit is still available. Tempted to replace them as an insurance. If it's not the carb then it has to be impulse.
