Hello hello.

I think it's time that we have a discussion on what xp crankcase that is designed for xpg system.
Most of what I have is pure xpg saws, rarely I get any xp's, but I always wanted to know what xp models Husky made that has same crankcase as xpg versions has.

Back in the old days we had Husky 42/246, the first 42's was already prepared for generator, later Husky changed this, seems they made 2 type crankcases, one for G and one without G.

So here is the questions, and hopefully it will be a good information thread on what XP's we can easily convert to XPG.
Your guys who work on XP saws like 346, 353, 357, 359, 362, 372, 545, 550, 562 and so on, are those crankcases drilled and threaded for generator?

Tor I'm doing a 372xp to xpg conversion right now. I'm robbing parts off a 2171W J-Red for my 372.
I have everything but the handle as of now. I still have to install the crank & bearings, but I hope by next week I should be able to start bolting parts on.
As far as I can tell everything is drilled and tapped.

thanks, that should count as one easy rebuild.
It's not a huge issue on those 3xx serie saws as none of my xpg's are drilled and threaded through the whole crankcase unlike 42/246, but no one like to drill.
Just currious to figure out if Husky did it easy for us on those 3xx and 5xx saws :)

The only part I seen so far that is diffrent but an easy fix is the tank.
I'll have to drill the two holes for the heating element and cut out the spot of the switch.

Good thought Tor. I never inspected many 3xx or 5xx series saws. I have mostly worked on 2xx series and they seem to be ready for the conversion. I know the 262's I have done are all generator ready. xpg parts are available for the 262's but that illusive top heated handle is harder to find than a hda87 carb. I am interested to hear from guys who have done conversions on 3xx and 5xx series. My 385xpg came factory heated. ( hot as a firecracker and wild as a buck!)

I did check my 346, 357, 362, 372 and 550 XPG's just now, none of them are drilled through the whole crankcase, that is kinda great since we dont need to split them for XPG build even if Husky should have one version for XP and another one for XPG.
No one like to drill, hopefully in a few weeks we will know if Husky made all those 3xx and 5xx saws ready for generator or not...if they did it would be great, as Sty57 say, it will just be tank modd work on all those 3xx saws.

I didn't know heated handles saws existed until I saw discussions about them on saw forums. I guess it doesn't get cold enough here in NC to justify having one... Is that what the three holes around the crank seal is for? If so, I have a few crankcases I can check for you when I get home.

Yes that's where the generator bolts on too, behind the flywheel.

I think there was two main reason why XPG saws wasnt offered in US, price tag and certification issues.
This with price difference is a very weird thing, we pay 30-40$ extra for an XPG while people in Sweeden has to pay over 100$ extra for XPG.
The few years I've been member on AS the interest for XPG's has always been there.

And yes, you find the threads for the generator around the seal, underneath the flywheel, so please post up what you see on your Husky saws.

@Tor R or anyone else have a 372xpg they can take a few pic's of the way the wires are run?

The one I'm converting to a G was completely disassembled. I don't know how if I have them all in the right order.

I need to get most of them routed the right way before I put the jug and carb plate on.

I belive there is at least two different xpg versions I have one 05 model that everything is working right, if you want I can take a look on the wiring on that one.
What year is the one you work with?

The parts are from a 2011 2172W
J-Red.
It has the lead off the genorator split into two leads. Both of them are female, one small and one bigger.

I'm guessing the bigger one goes to the switch and the other one goes to the carb plate.

This one has a plate on the bottom of the carb and one in between the carb and air filter elbow.

I'll run and find my 05, first we have to figure out is if the generator is the same type, I know my old 00 and 03 had one lead generator.....
If it's 2 lead generator I'll take lots of pictures for you

mine doesnt have 2 heat element on the carb, only the one element close to the choke flap.
I am almost 100% sure it's a one lead generator.
Where do your generator split the wiring?

On the old JReds 2147,2149,2152,2156,2159 WH they had 2 split generator but not like we have on 2172/372.
On those oldies one wire was going to the carb heat elements in a circle then grounding.
The switch I have one my 362/372's is two step switch

I do have another genorator with one lead. There was two different saws in the box of parts I got. Maybe I'm using the wrong one.
One was a 2172 and the other was a 2163.
