I wonder if a 555 clutch is a different diameter than the 545/550, and if so, if it might cause clearance issues between the clutch and bar tail?

The crank threads may be different, I know that the oe 550 has a small spline clutch drum...
Never worked on 555 or 560 but might run the same clutch as a 562.

I believe some of the first 550 had a 3 shoe clutch. Then changed to the 2 shoe shortly after for improved throttle response limbing because it is significantly lighter. But on a ported/modded 550/545 I bet the 3 shoe is a nice upgrade. Especially if you want to run a 3/8 bar chain setup.

Both my 550s have the 2 shoe clutch,
My ported one doe great running 3/8 fullskip chisel. It has a modded 562 oil pump, I run 24 inch light weight bar. It's great for bad/ steep ground pole patches and blow down puzzles.

Anyone interested in a YouTube video of my 550 running the 562 carb?

It pulls strong just loads up at idle.
May need a timing jump or just a port job...
Also did a video of my ported 550 with stock carb. Same bar and chain.

Man, the ported one sounded strong. Can’t believe they pull so well at 50cc. I am curious how much the ported one would gain with that carb. Also wonder if the idle would get better from more self tuning?

Really appreciate the video, you made my day!

I had a little time today so I pulled the flywheel so I could advance the timing. One third of the key to start. I did get the data from the saw. Not enough time on it since the 562 carb install. I need to cut a load of firewood with it.
I'll port it when I finish cutting a unit...

Keep us updated... did you modify the intake on the cylinder or just install everything? Did it need a gasket or did yours seal up once the carb floor was trimmed?

I am curious what happens when both the stratos and intake at the cylinder are matched to the boot.

Anyone know what happens when the stratos are enlarged ?

The mismatched intake port/strato might be what causes the loading up at idle. Fuel can puddle there. Regardless, both those saws pulled that bar great for there size! Must be that 34.5mm stroke... longer than a 272xp.

Ya they are mismatched kind of a puzzle when you make a gasket. I used a 1/64 gasket no sealer. The intake and stratos were opened . I might go back in and try to remove any dead spots.

If you widen the stratos to much you might end up with air leak issues.
Another thing that needs to be done is to trim about half the rubber carb av.
Its pretty tight with the wider 562 inlet/ filter holder.

Just remember Flip gets the credit here I just ran with his ideas. He must be busier than me.
Within the next couple of weeks I'll port this the same way I did my other 550. If I had a 545/550 with bad mains it would be interesting to try a build without stuffers.

I'm glad your running with it, you've gave me some ideas. I've had to shelve the saws for the awhile. I'm on the farm by my self 9 months out of the year and with the kids at home and wife's a teacher so we've had to set up a home office for her, it's been crazy. On a good note, I probably have a couple more acres of pasture now that we've been picked to rocks out them every day!

I've got a complete 572 intake setup for my 562 and that setup is going into the 550. I also have 562 & 550 small blocks I'm going to pull the stuffers out of. Thinking of all that stuff in boxes while on the tractor all day is torture sometimes!

My 550 is back apart, my gasket wasn't perfect. A couple of spots got smoothed out. Might help with any pooling. I have the day off do to weather, not safe to be on steep ground when it's windy and pouring. It's full of blow downs..
I'll be porting the jug today, the transfers will get raised a little. The exhaust needs lots of work.

Welp I got the cylinder ported turned out nice. The exhaust port is a pain in the ass. The plating is in the funky relief cut, just like 562 and 572. I try to get a lot of it with a diamond burr.

Now just need to reinstall the transfer covers after I get it FM free. Do another leak down test once I get the intake boot and jug back on.

The 550/ 562 Hybrid is back together.
I guess I'll call it that, it has a 562 el48 carb, oil pump, inner dog and wrap handle.
The jug has now been ported and a timing advance.
The muffler and squish are the same. YouTube video is loading I should have it up tomorrow.

Well, it sounds amazing. Especially in wood that size....
I would say your work is a success.

Wish I could see my grass. Got 3” of snow last night.
