hope Tor is around still, but I hope someone can answer my question. I bought the 42 Special from somebody on the site knowing that the piston was bad and thinking that somebody made a piston for it. My ignorance! The saw is in pretty good shape so I'd like to keep it going. After readin 23 pages of Tors thread, I still have that question. What piston will fit in this thing? The piston itself was 35mm in height. The jug said Gilardoni 6, not 241A. Its a 1993 Special. Closed window or open? Its got a closed on it now. Ebay has a 242 Meteor piston that is closed but will it require some work to get it right? Base gasket delete or machining the base? Or does an OEM 42 piston go in it and the difference between a 42 and a 42 Special is the ports. All help would be appreciated.

The Meteor piston is the correct one for that saw. You would need to measure squish to determine if a base gasket delete was possible.
I would like to believe that there was one AM kit in its time, as the Meteor piston has lowered the crown compared to stock.
At least what Meteor made was not for 42, 42 special or for 242.

Does an OEM 42 piston fit the Special?
Yep, but if you compare against 241A, the latter has a height of 34 mm, if you get the latter you get longer IN duration, which is not necessarily a bad deal.
The old 42 had a Gilardoni piston, 35mm high.

Yeah. This one had a 35mm piston

glad you showed up I remembered that I have seen something different in the 42 jug slug combos but couldn't remember the details.

FWIW the 242 piston should work but you will lose some case compression. better than a dead saw though.

How much? A little or alot? Why would it lose compression? Just asking...

Base compression
Squeezes mix from the base into the cylinder.
This is because of the different style of piston. Windowed vs slabbed

But the 246 has an open quad port with a windowed piston, correct?
Yes it does. But the top is bigger what would a bigger top end do to case compression ratio?

Widowed lowers case compression. A larger bore on same case will increase case compression ratio all else being equal
