Most 262 owners crave for the big carburator HDA 87, and they really start to be very difficult to get, special in US, it's different in Norway because there wasn't sold so many 262's.

120 vs 87
This thread doesn't seem complete without a pic of the 87 vs the 120.

I've worked with some of my projects in the last weeks, 254, 346, 357's, and mostly carb rebuilds, so I had one 199 and 87 in my hands today, figured out I should try to see how one 199 fit to 254.
Walbro 190,191,198,199 has same butterfly and venturi as 87 has.

So here it go:

One problem we get is choke lever, there is no space for an choke lever pointing down on 262.
Luckily, it's an easy solution (out with the screw and put the choke lever 180 grade up):

I've not got so far, but to make sure the trottle doesn't drop off (because it will) wield a tap so it look like 357,346 (357 to left, 262 to right):

As seen here there is some work left to do:

Nothing is perfect, choke position off position:

how about putting the throttle and choke shafts from one of the hda 120 or 144 carbs in
I wouldnt do that, the 199 choke goes against the clock direction, while 87 carb goes with the clock direction, those things can't be changed anyway, I belive it's an chocke stopper inside in the house........
The throttle system may look difficult but after my opinion it's the easist part.

Also, the distanse from carb body to throttle lever is 5mm 87vs199.
Just make something like 346/357 have for attachement to the throttle level
There is no angle difference, less to worry about

Nice work Tor. Great option for an alternative to the hard to find 87.

Great work Tor. These are the threads that people will look at for years to come.

I bought some brass rod to make throttle plates. I'm hoping that boring a 144/120 out will actually work. The 87 throttle plates seem to be NLA.

My understanding is that the 87 has a 19mm bore. Am I correct in that statement?

thanks for the nice words Al.
Yeah, HdA 87 and hda 199 has 19 mm throttle plates.
Their venturi size is equal also.

My CAD has me wanting to try a 20mm bore. I'd need to match the intake block and gaskets and drill the main jet for more flow.

I just hope it won't uncover any important passages in the carb. I'll have to open the Venturi proportionally larger as well.

What's the fun in not trying this stuff? My latest 261/262 is crying for more carb. I'm not sure if an 87 will even quench it's thirst.

hehe, it aint fun to go normal route on saws :D

As long you go bigger the 19 mm you have to make your own throttle & choke plates.
If you only wanted to change an 120 to 87 you can still order 87 throttle & choke plates from Walbro.

I don't think they are still available. Are 20mm plates a available for another walbro?

When I spoke to @super3 about the carb mod, he said that the 87 butterflies had been discontinued.

If there is any other 19-20.5 mm butterflies available, it would be much less work. There has to be another carb I can scavenge from.

I can match the bore to whatever is available. I'm boring it out anyway.

I ordered 2 dozen each (throttle and choke) from 4 different distributors. I got 3 from one place, all they had in NOS, no more available from Walbro.

I bought 3 HDA 164's to rob the butterfly's from.
That is lousy, I guess they are not updating their homepage properly.

Tor,
I pondered something similar over on the other site, few months ago. You maybe able to swap the shafts over from a 120 to the 198. It seems like I came across this when I was looking for something else on e the Walbro site.

I just looked at an 87 I got my hands on. There's nearly no Venturi in the carb.
i am happy you got one 87, I called around a bit to check if I could get one for you with no luck. Yes, 87 carb have almost no venturi!

bodies have same dimension so changing shaft would work, there are some issues changing shaft though.
199 has accelerator pump, not sure if 120 carb have throttle shaft to support the pump, on an 198 it doesnt mather since it doesnt have acc pump.
The choke rotation has different rotation on those 199 vs 87/120, there is choke stopper in carb house. I did an 120 rebuild with 98 shafts for one of my 242 projects, thats where I spot those choke stoppers.
The only way I see is to dremmel of that stopper.

Later today I see if I can fix the throttle connections, hopefully it will be an easy fix :)

NearLy no Venturi makes me scratch my head a bit.

How much Venturi does a carb need to actually function?

I need to measure the Venturi on the 87 vs. 120.

I've heard that grinding the Venturi out of certain carbs can do the trick for a lot of performance upgrades.

120 vs 87
Venturi 15.08 vs 16.66 mm on Walbro home page....
Throttle plate 17.4 vs 19mm

Interesting thing with venturi is HDA 98 (242 carb) throttle plate 17.4 mm with venturi 13.5mm, interesting because the good old 346 OE had 17.4 mm plate and 15.08mm venturi
