Do you start at the blunt end and work backwards, or do you start a foot or so up from the end and work toward the end? And how many cuts do you make? I know this is an idiotic question, but I can't seem to do this right, and end up with a lousy fit in the post. Thanks in advance. And I'm finding it very hard to get split rails these days, how about you fellas?

There's a fellow out in the country who makes them with a special long throw splitter out of locust.
They last a good 80yrs out of locust.
