A tree guy I knew, Ron Standish told me once that the average firewood cord has 390 pieces. A friend recently stacked a cord accurately hand he split the pieces smaller and found more like 550 pieces. Is there a way to get an average on this?

If I remember correctly, you can have around 125-350 pieces in one 8x4ft row depending on how big you split them. It's best to count a few stacks of your own size of wood to know about how many pieces are in cords you process.

a buddy of mine who has cut wood forever said he figured at one point it was 300 pieces of “one-hand” wood, just the size you can pick up
with one hand. but as said above, it could vary greatly. he has a large wood furnace and so his splits are big

Big hands and a strong grip would be variables in that method. I do not have a clue and will not be counting mine, I count buckets of ash it's being turned into.:)

reminds me of a teacher in school. if asked how long a test was going to be, or how long a paper had to be, his response was “as long as a piece of string”. lol

Update from Sam, burns wood only in his 1799 farmhouse: Completed stack today. 22 carts, 1700 pieces, 10 hours, one week. 3 cords. On pallets. Very satisfying. Loose pile 6x15 ft diameter cone. Metal roof is my preference. Dry wood lasts and burns efficiently. Rubber roof membrane works well too. Tarp leaks, disintegrates quickly.

How many logs in a full cord? A little less than twice as many as you see here:

These were bucked to 16" to 18" lengths -- ash and some oak. The buyer loved this wood and can't wait to burn it in his new fireplace.

A cord is 4'x4'x8' (cut/split/stacked), or 128 cubic feet. How many logs or splits is completely dependent on the size of either. I processed one tree that was 5 cords total. If I split super small pieces, I could make a cord many many splits.

I suppose that's why OP said "on average." I've tried working with a tree service company that cuts the unsplit logs so short in length that after splitting them, it would take over a thousand pieces to equal a cord. The rounds he leaves behind look like chariot wheels. :(

Not enough.

Tree trimmer guys wood over here is many times too long. I think they are trained to cut as big as can be carried.

Pap was fussy. Said stacked corners made inaccurate cords. He also said anyone using the term face cord should be slapped.

128, if each piece is 1 cubic foot. So, number of pieces in a cubic foot, times 128
