K, random question for the firewood guys. What length do you cut your firewood to for personal use? And/or what lengths do commercial guys cut their wood to for selling purposes?

With my job I have access to a bunch of free trees that we clear from lots before we build houses pretty much all year long. Right now there is mainly one guy that comes to get it all and he sells it as firewood for way inflated prices. I dont personally burn wood, but i know people that do, and cant help but want to fill my yard with wood and help out people i know that need wood. Soo i was curious what the "standard" firewood lengths are that most use.

Sounds like your a kind soul. I have an outdoor wood stove & cut my own wood 24" long. Other wise for donating or selling usually 16"-18". Hope this helps.

Most firewood that people sell is cut to 16", or thereabouts. Most people can fit a little bigger piece than that, but 16" will burn in most every stove. Also, 3 rows of 16" wood stacked 4'x8' makes a cord, so that's handy.

Since you asked about personal use, though, I have a stove that likes 10" splits, I also cut for my dad, and some to give away/sell at 16", and my syrup cooker will burn anything, so I'm cutting wood for that at 36". Some pieces smaller than that, but the fewer pieces, the less handling.

It all depends on the size of the tree, I need to be able to get it to the splitter. I have everything from 16" to 36" in my stacks, I cut them so I can manage them.

For my stove 18" is perfect, though I can fit a 24" piece if need be, it just has to go in at a 45° angle and is pretty inefficient. For my customers, 24" for two of theem who can can accommodate that (and more) and 18-20" for everyone else. At 20" a 4' and change height, ny 20" depth x 19'' length is a shade over 128 cubic foot. But most of my customers tend to tip beyond the asking price so I don't mind doing a bit extra. at 18" depth the length is 19' and height is 4.5' for 128+ cuft.

I cut all my wood at 16". My sawbuck is 8 feet long. The crossbucks are mounted at one inch on either side of 16" centers. I drop the log into the sawbuck, and run down the length, centering the bar between the crossbucks. I have an 8 foot 2x4 that I mounted a hook on the end. I use it to cut trunks to 8 foot length. The 2x4 also has holes drilled every 16". On larger trunks, I lay the 2x4 on top of the trunk as it lays on the ground and give a squirt of spray paint at each drilled hole. The trunk then gets cut into 16" rounds.
All of my wood storage facilities are based on four foot intervals. As has been said, 3x16" equals four feet. I generally like to store my wood on angle iron to keep it off of whatever surface. I turn the angle iron over and have the angle side up. I space it 12" apart, so that 16" lengths hang over the ends 2".

16" is standard for most everyone selling firewood. That is what I would expect to receive if I called anyone selling in my local area. If you are going to sell I would strongly suggest you consider cutting 16" length, it's just the most common length. Thst way you can stack a 4x8 row and it will be 1/3 of a full cord.

My firebox can take 24" per the manufacture but I cut 18-20". Some times it ends up being 22-23" because I don't mark anything, just eye it and go.
