How do you proceed after hitting a nail?

Step 1: Just push harder, rev it higher, keep going and pretend all the smoke is just from running too rich of a mixture.
Step 2: get new chain, move over 8" and promptly hit another, get pissed
Step 3: repeat step 1

Bytch and moan about it for a couple seconds. Then get back to work with a fresh chain. Figure out how to finish the cut with a wedge and sawsall if need be.

Exactly this!!!

I like full comp chain when cutting suspect trees, they will usually finish the cut. And then I swap chains, I always keep 4 sharp chains for every bar in my work truck.

We’re talking 42” bar .404 stuff here. Don’t want to wreck more cutters. I hit it months ago and just left it until the weather cooled. I’m not sure where the nail is. I wish I had gone ahead and cut a little more to be reasonably sure I was thru that nail.

I was thinking about attacking from either side with some almost worn out semi chisel 20”
Chains.

Or the Raisman semi 42” isn’t sharp but isn’t dull…maybe finish with it as it is just in case and then sharpen. It’s full comp and I have a skip loop but it’s full chis and will get more wrecked.

I'd say plunge-cutting with your worn-out chains then continuing with the 42 seems like the best option to me.

I guess everyone has been there!!! Brand new chain and hit a nail in the first cut. I always have with me a spare chain and a back up saw.

Usually .404 will make short work of a 16penny nail. I have had to contend with plenty of large maple yard trees. And .404 is my choice for the first 10ft of trunk because of this. When you find a 3ft length of 3/4 all thread in a elm crotch. Then you will have to get creative......... Ask me how I know......

But seriously if you can get by with attacking it from the other side. Get it close and use a pair of wedges to break it off. Or make a new cut a few inches either side of the one you found the nail with.

Do you absolutely have to finish this cut if so just use an old chain as you said.
Or if it's only firewood and you aren't hard up for firewood and not scrounging for every bit you can get, just buck that part of the log out and dump it in the fire heap.

Sometime you just keep going...1" ready rod.

Sometimes the metal wins.

.404 semi chisel can usually get through a nail, depends somewhat on the angle that you hit it. Bigger stuff like steel posts and large threaded rod require a more concerted effort to get through.

I normally use my 7900 with a chisel chain as the metal detector, generally works to find the offenders.

Keeping on cutting like this moron I sold a saw to. The bar was new prior to him. He says he only had 4 tanks of gas through it. He says he hit something in the log right away but it still seemed to cut so he just kept going. Fried it bad.

Sharpen the chain or put on a fresh one. If its just a nail its already cut through. If its something else your fresh chain will tell you.

nails are a small problem i have found railroad spikes in trees and metal fence posts they do the most damage because they are so long and they just strip all the cutters off. that tree with the first fence post cost me four chains.
