Honda trail 90 auxiliary tank

I bought a 1971 trail 90 in pretty great shape a few weeks ago, got her back up and running. Bike is an absolute blast

The auxiliary gas tank has a considerable amount of rust and gunk in it.

What is the best way to clean out all the rust and coat the inside of the tank?

I always put a cup or two full of hex nuts in and shook thoroughly
Then flushed the tank
And applied tank sealer.

What kind of sealer do you recommend? And do you just spray it in there? I have absolutely no experience in this department
