I've tried searching and can't come up with definitive, reliable information. My DCS-6401 with 7900 P&C in it recently stopped running. I think I've narrowed it down to the coil. Information & availability of coils seems sparse. My coil doesn't have a part number, it just says CDIM 120/12 and it's the red coil, which means it's a 13,500 rpm limited coil. Jacks small engine says 038-143-043 is the replacement for $194. Saw again only sells the coil & flywheel combo 010-038-141 for $211. And aftermarket options seem to have hit or miss reviews. $200 is a lot of dough to drop on a saw that parts are getting harder to find. Any advice or guidance? Is the black Dolmar coil (12,800 rpm limited) a drop in replacement? Cheaper?

I think I read somewhere that 372 coils can be fitted, but the flywheel needs to be re-timed.
I believe this also makes the rpm unlimited.
CORRECTION:
Apparently it is a 272 coil that can be fitted!

Other than that, used OEM from parts saws.

To my knowledge there have newer been dedicated AM 79xx coils.

You technically can not replace the 13.5k maroon coil with the 12.8k black coil without swapping out the flywheel too.

Other than that, a complete coil & flywheel swap is a direct bolt on!

If your coil is the red, I've got a used one I would be willing to part with. If your interested, send me a message.

Posted this in the 64xx-73xx-79xx thread some years ago on some possible easily obtainable/cheap replacement coils.

You still need (very minor) mods to fit up the coils and also to retime the flywheel but pretty easy to just eyeball.

Here's the link to the coil timing drawing I referenced in the old post.

I am not 100 percent sure on any of this info so take it as seriously as you want. From my experience every dolmar coil says to use a matching flywheel but I have yet to find one that is actually functionally different. From my gathering starter pawls and machining varies but keyway in relationship to magnets always seems to be the same. I believe differences have to do with rpm so if you already have a 13.5 coil I think you could bolt on any lower rpm coil fine. 272 coil does work well takes a little bit of grinding on coil and clocking the flywheel. Seems like power strokes offer is the easy way to go for sure he is a great guy to deal with and you will have a good marron coil and will be back in action

The 'original recipe' did use a 272 coil but you had to swap in the core from the dolmar coil.

No need to swap the core to the Dolmar core. Just modify mounting hold to achieve adjustability to the coil. I find shimming the coil slightly helps also. Had very good luck with this modification on my saws.
