When you're hot, you're hot. I went to a pawn and jewelry place today to pay off a gift for the wifey in layaway. That done, I browsed the gun selection and found a really nice late model Ruger 10-22. They had it stickered at $259.00. I asked the lady what her low price was, considering I just dropped a chunk on something sparkly. She said $219.00 out the door, so it came home with me.

The serial number dates to 2015 but it looks way newer than that. I disassembled it and was shocked at the apparent lack of use. All the internals were clean as a whistle and the metal parts showed very little wear. In fact, other than the usual rub mark from the hammer on the back of the bolt, everything inside could pass for new. I was expecting at least a little powder fouling but couldn't find any. Even the inside of the mag is clean. The barrel has some dust in it, so I guess this gun has spent most of its life in a closet or something. There was a tiny spot of surface rust on the barrel that came off with a bit of oil, otherwise the finish is as new. Hopefully I can get it properly dirty tomorrow!

CZ makes excellent guns. I really like the P10, wish we would get one in at the shop.

Test drove the 10-22 today. Function was 100% with good accuracy. The rear sight leaf was about bottomed out, so I installed a taller front with white bead and a windage adjustable Lyman 16 rear from my little gun junkyard. Hopefully can try it again tomorrow.

Good deal on that one. Everybody needs at least one in the safe.

Since I sold my Marlin 1895 a few years ago, the lack of a .45-70 has been a yawning chasm in my arsenal. The rifle I really want is a Henry Golden Boy, but I'm itching for a .45-70 too badly to save up for one. I figured I would get an H&R Handi Rifle to scratch the itch in the meantime, so I started bidding on some on GB. Even total beaters are going for over $300.00 and you have to add shipping and transfer on top of that. I put out feelers on Cast Boolits to see if anybody had one. One gentleman offered me a late model Handi in really nice condition for $400.00 face to face. While pondering that, another guy said he had a 2022 model Henry single shot for $400.00 plus shipping. It already has Skinner sights on it, which are around $80.00 by themselves. That sounds like a way better deal than anything with the H&R name on it, so we sealed the deal. Hopefully I can get my hands on it in a week or so.
Glad to hear you finally found another .45-70.

Thanks bro. My wife has a stainless 10-22 with
blue laminate stock I got her before we were married. Its seriously the only gun she has ever expressed interest in and said she wanted.

I'm planning to try trapdoor level loads with Unique first in the new .45-70. There's no need for anything stronger just for deer in the thick woods, and there's no point in pouring 50+ grains of expensive and hard to replace rifle powder in each round.

I agree completely on the .45-70 loads. I shoot mostly trapdoor loads in my Winchester 1885 High Wall. 300gr lead bullets and Unique are a good combination. If I want to punish myself, I stoke up some 405gr loads.

Awesome, I'll roll some up. I've put about 150 rounds through the 10-22 this weekend. Function has been 100% and the rifle seems as accurate as my others. Still not sure about the sights though, I'm pretty spoiled by the click adjustments of the Williams and Lyman receiver sights on my other rifles. The Lyman 16B folding leaf sight has a good sight picture but the adjustments are pretty well trial and error. Right now, the windage is dead on but I can only get the elevation slightly high or slightly low, can't seem to find the sweet spot.

Ok, so I scored a Lyman 457191 mold on Fleabay. This produces a 292 grain slug that should be a dandy in the Henry. I should receive both next week.

Yep, I rolled up some last night with 11-12.5 grains Unique. Hopefully I can test drive after work today.

I've been shooting the .45-70 alot lately with the Lyman 457191 292 grain bullet. Turns out it really likes 12.8 grains Unique with a large pistol primer. Another bonus is these bullets are about perfectly sized right out of the mold, just dip 'em in liquid alox and dry for a day is all that's needed. I've also been trying to find the right combination of front and rear sight for it. The tall Marble's folding rear and a .530 front seems the best so far.
