FOUND IT Good used Stihl 044 crankshaft

im in need of a good used (12mm) 044 crankshaft for a build. Last one sh*t the bed and took out everything else so I’m starting with this basket case for a full build

Also might be interested an good OEM piston & possibly an OEM cylinder unless I can save the old one.

Can I ask, do those work on both 10 & 12mm 044’s?

Sorry I’m still attempting to wrap my head around the differences. I have a 12mm basket case I’m building and also have another 044 that came in today that needs a top-end build but I won’t know if that’s a 10 or 12 till I get into it..

Yup, itll bolt on. I built a 12mm with a 10mm cylinder. Ran like a monster!

So, is it the other way around that won’t fit? I thought I read somewhere that 1 combo works but the other doesn’t due to either timing or ring locating pin location? I don’t recall exactly which it was

The 10mm cylinder and piston had narrower ports and skirt/pin location. So you shouldn’t run a 12mm cylinder on a 10mm saw because the ring edge may catch.

A 12mm saw can accept a 10mm top.

Meteor makes a 10mm piston and the skirts on it are as wide (if not wider) than 12mm oem. If you install the 10mm meteor, you can use a 12mm jug on a 10mm saw.

The problem is that a meteor 10mm 044 slug is just their 12mm slug with a smaller pin bore. They spaced the pin bosses just as wide as a 12mm piston which was a mistake. There is a gap/slop there when installed on a 10mm rod. It allows the bearing to slip sideways and come out of the rod bore. As bad as that seems, I’ve yet to hear of any true failures from the meteor 10mm install.

Awesome info! I may have 1 of each to build so pertinent info such as this really helps. Who knows, maybe after the first build i may complicate things further and start inquiring about the ole 044/046 hybrid
