, after engine starts. First for me. Anyone experience this?
I'm thinking solenoid or switch.
Old but good Toro Wheel Horse.

And if I quickly turn switch from run to off then run, the starter still engages while engine runs.

Kohler mag 12 horizontal.
I remembered last time out my helper pressure washed,
So I blew every electrical I could with air.
Now it's behaving better but I think this is not over.

Unplug the small wire going to the solenoid with it running. If it dis engauge then you have a short to power on the signal wire. Either by the switch or the harness itself. If it stays engauged with the small wire unpluged it's most likely the starter.

Take a picture of the solenoid and post it up. That would help a ton.

The starter gear may stuck and not retracting. It will still sound like it's engaged, but the gear is still engaged with the flywheel gear.

If the starter is still engaged electrically, then the power wire stud on the starter will read 12 volts in the run position. If it doesn't, then the starter gear is stuck. Most of the time I have to remove the starter and spray a little penetrating oil on the splines and tap the gear down lightly with hammer and socket. Then work it up and down a few times and good to go.

I think you may have nailed it Stretch.
I got it to retract by throttling up.

Dealer starters are gold plated if even available.
Ones on am a zon are junk imo.
I'll figure something out here. Thanks guys.
I'll reply back WHEN I win lol.

A little rust breaker or silicone spray on the splines and you won't have to worry about replacing the starter.

I have some spray and will try that.

Went and looked at 2 parts tractors, no help, wrong model and years.

I might end up building one starter from two. The return spring on the drive "seems" weak. I have a dealer I can try in business hours.

The spring is always weak. It is only there to help gravity a little bit. When the engine starts, it spins the starter gear in the direction that the gear should spin down the splined shaft. You likely have a little dirt built up at the top of the shaft which causes the gear to stick. A little spray should soften it up. No parts needed.

Took starter off. It is AM and is clean and seems fine, Unlike OEM there are two 1/2" thick spacers that do not let it over retract.
Looks like they both would follow the drive and the second will sometimes fall down, not allowing the drive to retract.
I coated the first with silicone between it and starter base. Cleaned and Lubed spiral with teflon gun lube.
Helperman is reinstalling starter now and I'll let it sit a while before I try it.
Least that is my take. Thanks again.
If anyone has an oem starter for 300 series wheel horse I'd take it. I am sure some others may work.

The starter does not go by the brand or series of tractor. It goes by the brand and type of engine.

You can probably find a small engine valve spring that will work. I think I will take my starters off on the used lawn tractors I just bought and give the splines a spray.
